Kyoto Hidden Gems in Japan 🇯🇵(No Crowds!)
Good morning. Hey guys, welcome back to my channel. This is AOI here. And today I’m going to visit Kyoto. But hold on, I’m not going to the usual “Instagram famous spots” like Kiyomizu Temple, Kin-Kakuji Temple, Gin -Kakuji Temple, Fushimi-Inari Shrine? No. Instead, I’ll take you to some hidden gems that even locals might keep secret. Let’s skip the crowd and find the real Kyoto together. By the way, I’m actually staying in Nara right now. So, first, I need to make my way to Kyoto. Let’s hop on a bus and head over to JR Nara Station before we start the adventure. The bus should be here in a minute. So, let’s get going. I’ve just arrived at Nara Station. But wait, this isn’t the current Nara station. This building is actually the old station, and now it’s a sightseeing spot. Pretty cool, huh? And this is a modern Nara station. It’s super clean, modern, and really convenient for travelers. I’m taking the Miyakoji Rapid train that leaves at 9:07. It’s only morning, but the temperature is already 33° C with 55% humidity. Basically, I’m melting. I’m transferring to the subway here at Rokujizo station. Here we are at Rokujizo station on Kyoto’s Tozai line. Look around. It’s super clean, peaceful, and almost too quiet, like I should be whispering. I just got off at Ono station. From here, it’s a short walk to Zushin-inTemple, our very first stop on today’s Kyoto adventure. I just checked Google Maps and it’s only
about a 5-minute walk from the station. We’ve arrived at Zuishin-in Temple. Have you guys heard of Ono no Komachi? She lived over a thousand years ago during Japan’s Heian period. She was famous for her incredible talent in Waka poetry, and the poems she left behind are still admired today. Ono no Komachi is also featured in the famous Hyakunin Isshu, a classical anthology of 100 poems by 100 parts. Today, many people enjoy these poems through Karuta, a traditional Japanese card game, keeping her legacy alive in a fun and incredible way. The color of the flowers has faded in vain,
while I’ve spent my life gazing at them. Here’s one of Ono no Komachi’s most famous waka poems. Truly timeless and still admire today. You can enter the temple for 500 yen. Some areas do not allow photography, so please be careful. And this is a temple. Let’s be quiet and respectful. I didn’t film it, but I also made sure to pay my respects at the temple. Back on the subway, and we’ve reached Nijyojo-mae station. Nijyojo castle is pretty famous, but we are skipping it today. Let’s save the crowds for another time. Here we are. This is our second hidden gem, “Shinsen-en” a peaceful spot where you can escape the crowd and feel like a secret Kyoto explorer. Shinsen-en, a historic garden in Kyoto, it was originally built back in the early Heian period around, the 9th century, as an imperial garden used for official ceremonies, Buddhist rituals and fancy imperial banquets. And one interesting thing about Shinsen-en is its connection to the famous monk Kukai who is said to have prayed here. The temple also enshrines the goddess
“Zennyo-Ryuo” means dragon king of good women who is believed to protect people and bring blessings. Today it’s a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city with a beautiful pound and seasonal flowers. A perfect hidden gem. I bought this lucky charm, and legend says that if you hold it, silently make a wish, and cross the bridge to the shrine, your wish will come true. So, of course, I had to try it. Fingers crossed! Remember, this is a sacred spot. So, let’s be quiet, respectful, and polite while we enjoy it. No running around like crazy tourist. And that’s a wrap on today’s Kyoto adventure. We discovered hidden gems, got inspired by Ono no Komachi’s poetry, explore the history garden, and even tried the magical lucky charm. Who knows? Maybe my wish will come true. Thanks for joining me and don’t forget to like and subscribe my channel. See you in the next video. Bye.
