Apple (AAPL.US) CEO Tim Cook has arrived in Tokyo, Japan, marking his first official visit since December 2022. Cook will visit the newly renovated Apple Store in Ginza, Tokyo, which was also Apple’s first overseas retail store. In a post on social platform X, Cook stated that this reopening represents another significant milestone in the company’s journey in Japan and symbolizes its close ties with Japanese customers and communities.
Apple is facing Japan’s new smart software competition law, set to take effect on December 18 this year. The legislation aims to promote competition by simplifying the entry of external companies into the smartphone application distribution and payment markets, thereby restricting the business models of Apple and Google. Japan accounts for only 6% to 8% of Apple’s sales, impacted by the weak yen. Apple’s market share in Japan fell by 6.4 percentage points year-on-year to 46.4% in Q2 this year.
