I'm truly curious. Does it have something to do with the style of cooking Japanese food?

    Because Japanese homes and apartments are small. 

    Note that what you’re showing here is a cheaper/older kitchen (but still super common). Most newer, more expensive builds have a kind of peninsula and a counter, or people diy their own “kitchen island” or use the dining table (which is basically in the kitchen) to prep on.

    Is that a “huge” kitchen sink? I would think a smaller sink would be quite unusable for washing dishes. The counters are small because there isn’t much space.

    When I was in an old style Japanese kitchen there was a large center island where all the chopping was done.
