The 2025 edition of the ATP Tokyo Open sees a jam-packed draw with several top players gracing the courts in Tokyo. The whole week promises to include action packed tennis and as ever, we preview and predict the matches scheduled for you.

ATP Tokyo Day 1 Predictions
Nuno Borges vs Yosuke Watanuki

Head-to-head – First Meeting

Nuno Borges plays his first match since his fantastic battle with Tommy Paul in the second round of the US Open. The Portuguese is an exciting player to watch and this week presents an opportunity for him to nab important ranking points. He faces Yosuke Watanuki who hasn’t played much on the main tour this year and while the wild card slots him directly into the draw, Borges should be one moving ahead.

Prediction: Borges in 2

Matteo Berrettini vs Jaume Munar

Head-to-head – Berrettini 1-0 Munar

Matteo Berrettini has not played much since Wimbledon in June as the Italian is still some way off his best level. His first tournament back after Wimbledon was last week in Hangzhou where he lost in straight sets in the first round. His first round opponent here is Jaume Munar who has won a decent amount of matches this year and enters this tournament after having reached the fourth round at the US Open. Expect the Italians’s woes to continue and Munar to make the most of it.

Prediction: Munar in 3

Marton Fucsovics vs Frances Tiafoe

Head-to-head – Fucsovics 2-2 Tiafoe

This match is a very tight match to call as both players have split their previous four meetings. Marton Fucsovics won the tournament in Winston Salem this year but was knocked out in the first round at the US Open. The Hungarian has played well in the qualifying rounds here and looks to be in decent form. Frances Tiafoe would have ideally liked better results this year and maybe this is the week it falls together for the American. Having said that, Tiafoe looks unlikely to boss around Fucsovics from the baseline and expect the Hungarian to just edge this one.

Prediction: Fucsovics in 3

Denis Shapovalov vs Daniel Altmaier

Head-to-head – Shapovalov 1-0 Altmaier

Denis Shapovalov will look to build on his decent performance at the US Open as the Canadian looks to end 2025 strongly. He faces Daniel Altmaier who entertained at the US Open and showed us all that he can produce his best tennis on the hard courts as well. Expect Altmaier to keep it competitive for a set but Shapovalov looky likely to be the one dictating points from the baseline.

Prediction: Shapovalov in 2
