Visiting Nagasaki, The City Not Meant For The Bomb
All right. Well, today’s the day that I’ll be heading out. Not on this guy over here, though. One day it’d be cool to do that. But today, I’m going to be heading out to Japan for the next 3 weeks. And right now, I’m in Vancouver, taking a break, having some lunch before I go off to YVR with the Sky Train, which is actually pretty convenient to get there. From Waterfront Station where I’m now, it’ll be 30 minutes there. I still got plenty of time until then. So, I’ll see you there next. Okay, so now we’re here at the airport. Lots of excitement. It’s always fun to come here. Lots of people coming and going. But the best part is when you’re part of the group of people that get to go somewhere off on a new adventure. They got a little food court here, but I already ate something for lunch, so I feel pretty good about that. Now I just got a couple hours or so. Actually, no, a little more than that before my flight heads out. Just got past the security check. Let’s go to the gate. I feel YVR airport is actually pretty nice once you pass the security section. Lots of food options, a little nice nature area they did here. And here they got some sweet sea creatures to look at. So for the people who know, a lot of 747s have been decommissioned. So it’s actually a really rare sight to see one that’s still in use. And looks like Lufansza still uses theirs. I remember flying with this when it was British Airways back in the late 90s when I was very young and that was a really cool experience. So seeing one again in person is very special actually. Let’s find our seat. There goes the 747 Lupanza smoking and the use of all smoking. Kind of cool to see the Pokemon incorporated in the safety video and as they do have a partnership with ANA. Let the flight commence. Okay, so here we are at Hanetta Airport, Terminal One, waiting for my plane to Nagasaki. And in the meantime, I found a pretty cool observation deck, so I can show you guys around here. Can see the whole of the airport. Planes coming through. I got a lot of time left before I got to go. Just going to walk around. They got a marketplace inside the airport as well. It’s a hot one. 30 plus degrees today as expected. Every day it’s kind of like that really. But I don’t mind in the end. It’s what I like. So, going to do some more exploring before I get on my flight later. This is here at the terminal. It’s pretty cool looking. I got a couple of hours to go until my flight boards. So, I’m just going to be walking around here exploring the place. I actually didn’t film too much yesterday when I arrived because it was so hectic going through security and stuff and I just couldn’t take the camera out and really do any filming. Also, at one point like when I tried to get my eim working, it wouldn’t work and I had to spend like an hour in the airport and I had to deal with the online chat to get it to work. So, finally my eim works, but it it gave me so much stress. I just couldn’t film anything after leaving the airport. After going to the hotel, I just wanted to sleep and relax. So, we’ll see. So far, everything’s going good with the Eim and we’re just going to wait until we board the next flight. Got the robots patrolling out here. Just got through security check. Checking out the terminal after the security point. Then I see they have these station booths for the people who really want to keep working. [Music] And then around the corner here, another really nice garden area. So let’s take a look at this. It’s always nice when they put a lot of effort in the terminals to make them more welcoming, more enjoyable to spend time in. And these are real leaves. Yeah. Wow. Cool to see this. Look at that. Awesome. They have shops, lots of choices for eating. Pretty cool. A nice little pre-flight meal before heading out. It’s udon with fishcake. So, I’m walking here and I notice they have this free autonomous service. Apparently, you just sit on it and it’ll take you where you want to go. That’s pretty sweet. I assume that’s more for the people who actually have difficulty walking and not just abused by anyone. But still looks pretty fun. [Music] And we’re on the bus ready to go. Arrived in Nagasaki. Okay, I’m in Nagasaki City. After arriving, I had to go to the train station. Actually, I had to get a couple of tickets for a special train ride that’s coming up. So, I’ll post about that soon when I go do that. But right now, I’m going to find a hostel I’m staying at. So, walking through the city a bit. Got a good look at what it looks like around. I should be pretty close. So, I’m following the pictures they gave me of how to get there from the booking. And looks like I’m going the right way so far. Pretty nice spot around here. Look at that. In the mountains. Very humid, but wonderful, wonderful area. Looks like I’ll have to pass through these story gates. Should be at the top there. That’s what I like about Japan. Everything just seems so nice to be around. Has this peaceful vibe, you know? Even though the city’s been through a lot, they really did do good for themselves after that and make it a nice place to be in. Okay, I found a place. I thought I had to go up this way, but you can see the sign’s right there. Kagamia. A little bit of a path that way to get to the room. So, I found it. And now time to go explore Nagasaki and get to the Peace Memorial Park today. See if we can get there before sunset. [Applause] Here we are at Nagasaki Peace Memorial Park. Crazy to think what happened here. just like in Hiroshima. And to think that almost what happened here wouldn’t have happened at all. And what I mean by that is that the initial intention for the US was to go after Kokura, a different city, but due to bad weather there, they got lucky. And what was supposed to happen there happened here instead. high. And up front we have the main sculpture. And here it is. The raised right arm serves as a stark warning of what happened, what dropped from the sky, and what could drop from the sky again. So look up. But the left arm horizontally reflects a gesture of peace and hope for the future that what happened may never happen again. That they may never be atomic weapons of such power. But who are we kidding? The reality is that the atomic weapons in existence today are far greater than what were once used. And all we can hope is that no power like that could ever destroy humankind again. So far, we’ve been careful about that, but there’s always worry about something like that happening again. But let’s hope the symbol of this statue and its peace will stay and continue. Listen to that. I’ve been hearing that ever since I came here in the trees. I think they’re sacas. I’m not quite sure, but they’re loud. And they kind of start slow, then they go really quick, then they pause, and then they go through it all again. Beautiful view up here. It’s quite a mountainous city. I realized and because of that, the impact of the second nuclear bomb was actually less on Nagasaki than Hiroshima. Even though the power of the nuclear bomb that was dropped here was more powerful. And here is a memorial to the Hippo Center, 1945, August 9th at 11:02. Pretty much ground zero where the nuclear weapon exploded. This was a 50th anniversary commemoration, a reminder of those who suffered dearly for what happened right here. This is where the explosion happened. So being here even just two days, something I noticed is that Shi Otani does a lot of advertising for Japanese products. How about we go inside and get something for tonight? [Music] [Music] a little tonight. See what I’ll pick up. [Music] Okay. Hello everybody. So today my intention was to go to Ikashima. It’s an abandoned island. People used to live there. It’s pretty cool spot. Old buildings there. It just looks like an apocalypse happened. I think they actually said some movies are filmed there for like apocalyptic scenes and stuff like that. But anyways, so the plan was to go there. I got about halfway, but I realized from Nagasaki station to get there, uh, the public transportation in Nagasaki, I wouldn’t say is quite the most um, reliable, at least in my situation, not being familiar with the area too much. It’s very rural out there. Even the halfway mark where I got was nobody could speak English. But I mean, if I continued on, my only worry was that I wouldn’t have enough time to get back in Nagasaki. And so, I felt I had to kind of give up on that plan and just return to Nagasaki and just try to enjoy the day here and explore around here a little more. This is kind of cool looking. Mai Nagasaki Cocoa Walk. Looks like a mall here. And you got a ferris wheel at the top there. But yeah, I decided to just do the best I can with what I got today. So yeah, I’ll just be exploring the city for the rest of the time while I’m here before I head out tomorrow. So, I actually didn’t know about this until I arrived here, but apparently it looks like they got a temporary Pokemon center here in Nagasaki. So, that’s kind of cool to see. From August 8th to October 5th, and I happen to be here just at the right time. Let’s see what it actually looks like. It’s pretty cool. plastics. They got the flashies everywhere. Just rows of them. [Music] The fact they got Let’s see if they actually have any stuff. Some more flushes out here. Also stumbled upon the Nagasaki Stadium for their soccer team here. It’s pretty cool to get to see up close like this just across from where the little Pokemon center was. They even got Pokemon around the stadium here. It’s pretty cool to see more show ads. [Music] Like I said, he’s everywhere. So, another interesting thing I found here in Japan is the parking situation. You got your regular parking, but then you got your multilevel parking in a very interesting way. Looks like you can have your car put up and brought back down so they can maximize the use of space. Instead of having rows at the bottom, they can just stack them up like apartments. Pretty interesting. Watch out for mall security. Just wanted to point out also how nice this tram station looks. And they got these old school looking trams. So conveyor belt for cars. So now I assume this one will go in. That’s really different. I haven’t seen that before. And off it goes. Cool. And here we are at Nagasaki Seaside Park. Nothing’s more beautiful than seeing these type of trees. Yeah, it really makes you feel like you’re somewhere really warm. Nice evening walk and it leads to a nice green field. The grass is meticulously taken care of. Wow. It’s like a golf course kind of grass here. I think this is a nice way to finish my time here in Nagasaki. After today, I got to wake up super early tomorrow around 4:00 a.m. to catch the bus from Nagasaki to Fukuoka. And then I got only one hour between Fukuoka to get on the next bus to Takho to get to the next spot which you’ll see then. But anyways, just check out this nice view. Wow. Anyways, yeah, that’s what I got to capture of Nagasaki in my time here. It was nice to come out here. I may have not been able to do everything I wanted, but hey, you know what? In the end, it’s not too bad. It’s a really nice place to visit all the way in the south of Japan. farther from anywhere I’ve been before in Japan last time I came here. So, I can cross that off my list. And here’s one last shot of Nagasaki in the evening sky. It looks really nice. Right now I’m just walking over to where the tram is. You can get a view of that from above. There they are. Just beautiful. Very studio jibly looking tra. Very nice.
