Exploring Hakodate on Foot: 17 Miles, a Star-Shaped Park & Monkeys 🐒#japan #travel #youtubeshorts

This is what it’s like to walk 18 miles in Hakodate. I was in Hakodate and I decided it was a good idea to walk to the top of the city and back down to the bottom. My first stop was Goryokaku Tower which is only 3 km away. At the top of the tower, you get a really great view of Hakodate, but more importantly the park below which is shaped like a six-point star. After I got my fill of the tower, I visited the park and walked around for a bit and enjoyed the atmosphere of this peaceful park. It was then time to get to my next destination. After a 5 and a half km walk, I arrived at Sasanagari Dam. This place was in such a random location, but it caught my attention on Google Maps. There was no one there, so I explored in solitude and ended up chilling at the top of the dam, looking at the water while hearing nothing but birds chirping and the leaves in the trees rustle was exactly what I needed. My final stop was only 9 km away and that was Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden. It was kind of disappointing, but at least they had monkeys and I love monkeys. The botanical garden was cool as well. It’s a cheap place to go to, so if you want to stop by while you’re here, I’d say it’s worth it. Next, I walked 5.5 km back to the hotel and called it a day, totaling 17.6 mi and 35,000 steps. A day well spent.

If you’re planning a trip to Hokkaido, Japan, Hakodate should absolutely be on your list. In this video, I take you on a full-day walking journey through the city of Hakodate, covering over 17 miles and 35,000 steps.

First stop: Goryōkaku Tower, a modern observation tower with panoramic views of Hakodate and the iconic star-shaped Goryōkaku Park below. This unique star fort is especially stunning in spring and autumn, making it a must-see spot.

Then I walked over 5km to Sasanagare Dam, a hidden gem nestled in nature. It’s quiet, peaceful, and completely off the tourist trail. Perfect for those looking to escape the crowds and connect with nature.

Lastly, I visited the Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden—a quirky little spot with lush greenery and even a monkey enclosure. It may not blow your mind, but if you love monkeys or need a cheap activity to fill your afternoon, it’s worth stopping by.

This video is all about slow travel, walking through quiet parts of Japan, and soaking in the real atmosphere of Hokkaido’s coastal gem. If you’re someone who enjoys exploring Japan beyond the typical tourist hotspots, you’re going to love this.
