Built in 1944, this network of tunnels served as a command center during the Battle of Okinawa. Walking through its narrow passageways was a powerful reminder of the island’s role in World War II. Next, we visited Shurhou Castle, once the political and cultural heart of the Ryuku Kingdom. Although much of the castle was destroyed in a 2019 fire, restoration is underway and you can still see the impressive gates and learn how the Ryuku Kings connected trade between Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. After the castle, we enjoyed a traditional Okinawan lunch. Flavors that blend Japanese, Chinese, and Southeast Asian influences just like the island’s history. Finally, we ended the day on Kokosai Street, lively center of Naha, filled with shops, crafts, and plenty of street food. It’s the perfect mix of old and new Okinawa.
