5 Days in Tokyo: Japan Travel Itinerary + Day Trip to Mt. Fuji (Ep. 2)
Returning to Tokyo by bullet train after spending a few days in Osaka and Kyoto. The train journey takes approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. The ride was comfortable, fast, and smooth—a wonderful experience to have in Japan. Back in Tokyo, we stayed at the same hotel we showed in the first part of our stay. If you want to see how the hotel is, go back and watch the first part. After checking in, we went to Shibuya to revisit our favorite Kaiten Sushi spot in Tokyo. Uobei has multiple restaurants across Tokyo. After visiting a few on our first trip, this one is our favorite! They are a traditional conveyor belt sushi restaurant. You order from a tablet and the food arrives at your seat, with minimal human interaction. They have many options, not just sushi. The sushi seems fresh, tastes delicious, and is very affordable. Our favorites were the Fatty Tuna and the Torched Salmon with Mayo. We highly recommend this place. We had a lot of sushi, everything was delicious, and it was so cheap—approximately $10.50 USD per person. We went to Akihabara to enjoy the night by shopping for retro video games and playing. Time to play and lose some money at the claw machines. Taito Station has a lot of claw machines, and they also have arcades, including retro ones. We tried many different claw machines and finally got one to end the night. We started Day 4 by getting some breakfast at the convenience store and heading to a new area we hadn’t visited on our first trip. This place is vast, with many things to see. Even with the crowds, because it is so big, it was peaceful—an amazing place for a stroll. The temple is so beautiful and huge. We even saw a wedding celebration during our visit there. Shinjuku is located close to Harajuku, so we decided to head there to enjoy the day. But we recommend going at night, as it has so many nighttime activities, bars, and neon lights. We decided to try this popular Japanese restaurant chain that specializes in Takoyaki. I really like Takoyaki and they serve it with different toppings, like egg salad, which is another thing that I really like. So I decided to try it. My wife had the Yakisoba, and she enjoyed it. Good portion and great value. I had the Takoyaki with egg salad and it was so good. Not the best Takoyaki I’ve had on this trip, but the combination elevated the flavor! I really recommend this dish. After lunch and enjoying Shinjuku, it was time to revisit another favorite from our first trip to get a dessert. They have many locations in Tokyo and around the world. We have seen them in Seattle, USA. They specialize in cream puffs, which are our favorite. They have a crispy outside, soft inside, lots of delicious filling, and are very affordable. This time, they also had a special one: Mille-Feuille. It was delicious too, but we prefer the traditional one. It was already mid-afternoon, so we decided to visit another iconic place in Shinjuku and get some drinks. This alley has many Izakayas, making it a great place to enjoy the evening. Since we already had plans for the night and were in Shinjuku, we decided to visit during the day. It’s already beautiful during the day, but at night it’s even more beautiful with all the lights, but it is also packed with people. You will pay more here because it’s a touristy area, but even being expensive, we think it’s still worth it to grab a couple of drinks and enjoy the vibe. We decided to stop at one of the Izakayas; we don’t know the name of the place. There weren’t many options open in the afternoon. We ordered a couple of drinks and some yakitoris. The chicken ones were delicious and very juicy. But we preferred the pork belly ones. After getting some rest at the hotel, we headed for dinner at our favorite restaurant in Tokyo. We found this place on our first trip while visiting the Senso-ji temple. We wanted to eat Tonkatsu, and there was a huge line at a famous restaurant near the temple. We decided to walk and found this very small local restaurant. This restaurant is so small, with one table and a few seats at the counter. I think it fits less than 10 people, with only the chef and the owner working together. They have a menu in English, but they barely speak English, just the basics. We started with the potato salad, and it was delicious. It has a sort of smoky flavor; I’m not sure what it is, maybe smoked tofu. And now their specialty: our favorites are the Pork Loin and the Shrimp ones. They are so crispy, not greasy at all. The pork loin is very succulent. And the sides are delicious too, especially the Miso soup and salad with their homemade dressing. The shrimp is huge and very crunchy too. Perfectly cooked. We highly recommend this place. It’s our favorite restaurant in Tokyo. Lots of rain on our way back, but we had to stop at the Lawson convenience store to get some dessert. We tried a few items from Lawson, and our favorites were the Fromage Tart and Crunky. We’ll pass on the eclair. The Fromage Tart is amazing; it’s a must-try! A great way to finish the day! We started Day 5, our last day in Tokyo, with cloudy weather—at least it was not raining. We decided to check out early and go to Ueno station, where we would catch the train to the airport. Our flight was in the late afternoon, so we left our luggage at the station in the lockers and went to explore the Ueno area. This street is very close to the station; it has lots of shops, restaurants, and bars. A great place to find souvenirs. A lot of people make last-minute purchases here before returning home. There are many Japanese food products too. Also, my favorite Takoyaki is located here. I’ve already tried Takoyaki in many places, even in Osaka where it was created, but this is my favorite. A very simple place; it doesn’t seem the cleanest one, but their Takoyaki is so cheap and delicious! Their Takoyaki has a lot of flavor; I think they put some seasoning in the batter. It’s not bland at all, with a lot of filling too. The toppings add even more flavor. Delicious. We highly recommend it. After doing some shopping, it was time for lunch. We found this place at Ueno Station. Their specialty is the Katsu-sando, a sandwich made with a Tonkatsu. We hadn’t had any of this sandwich, even on our first trip. The bar’s ambiance is very modern and cool. If you like whiskey, they have many options. We had a couple of appetizers: the Chicken Karaage was delicious. The portion was small, but it was great and very crispy. We wish there was more. And the truffle fries were great too, a perfect pair with the drinks. They weren’t golden, but they were very crispy. The sandwich was incredible! The meat was juicy and crispy, the bread was crispy too, and the salad was a great accompaniment. Our favorite item there! Right next to the station, there’s also Ueno Park. We went for a walk after lunch since we were about to board a long flight. This park is also huge. Lots of things to do. We didn’t have much time this time, but on our first visit, we visited many places in this park. Time to catch the train to the airport. But before that, we will share a few of our favorite places that we visited on our first trip that we were not able to revisit this time. Another beautiful and huge park in the heart of Shinjuku. It’s free and has lots of attractions. A great place to visit, especially around the cherry blossom season. Another free observatory with amazing views! The hardest part of visiting this place is figuring out where the elevator is because this place is huge. Go to the underground floor, in the middle of the building, and you will find the elevator to the observatory. This tower looks like the Eiffel Tower. You can buy tickets to go all the way up. But if you choose to just enjoy the view on the ground, it’s still amazing. There are temples nearby too. If you are a fan of Pokémon, this is your place! There are many Pokémon Centers across Tokyo too. For the cafe, you have to make a reservation! I got my reservation months in advance. It was worth it! The experience is amazing, the food was great and there are a lot of customized products available to purchase. Before catching the flight, we had our last meal of this trip. The airport in Japan is different from other countries. Meals are not that expensive, and food quality is great. You can even eat for very little money in convenience stores because they have the same prices as in the city. We had some Ramen before heading home, and it was very good. Not as good as the ones that we had in the city, but a lot better than the ones that we eat outside of Japan. Time to board back to Canada. The journey is the same as we had on our arrival, with the first flight to Calgary. We flew with Westjet, and the experience was great. The seat was more comfortable than other big Canadian airlines. Both flights were calm. Thanks for watching; stay tuned for the next videos of our trip in Japan and other destinations.
