Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru is making arrangements to visit New York next week to address the United Nations General Assembly.
Ishiba earlier announced his intention to resign. He plans to make every effort to tackle challenges both at home and abroad until his successor takes over.
Former Prime Minister Kishida Fumio did not deliver a speech when he attended the assembly last year. That was after he announced his decision to step down.
Government sources say Ishiba has decided to speak at the UN as he believes it is a good opportunity to send a message to the international community as the leader of Japan.
Ishiba is also considering traveling to South Korea the following week to hold a summit with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.
His plan comes as part of so-called “shuttle diplomacy” efforts to promote mutual visits by both nations’ leaders. Lee visited Japan in August for the first time since taking office.
Ishiba hopes the next administration will build on his diplomatic achievements, such as meetings with leaders of various countries and participations in international conferences.
