Ishigaki Island Resort Hotels|Rising Star or Classic? Seven x Seven vs Fusaki Beach Resort
This episode of Kate’s Slow Travel is an Ishigaki resort stay. We’re comparing the chic new urban-style hotel “Seven by Seven Ishigaki” and the time-tested classic “Fusaki Beach Resort.” Two irresistible resorts—Which one are you? First up, a brand-new resort that opened in 2024— Seven by Seven Ishigaki. You can feel the luxury from the entrance. Check in smoothly with a QR code, and your out-of-the-ordinary resort experience begins! So good! The passion fruit was delicious too. The lounge is stylish, huh? Right! Here we are. We can get in with a QR code this time? Looks like it. The key— — is a QR code! Wow. So chic! Super stylish. Amazing. It’s huge! Even the music is upbeat.♪ Totally. Let’s do a room tour. Let’s! First… Two huge beds! So rough. What an intro. Are they queens? I think so? They look queen-size, right? Depending on the room type, you can get three singles, or even a loft upstairs in some rooms. And these are low beds, Right. easy to sleep on—low-bed style. And this hotel is designed for longer stays, so it’s like a condominium— with a fully equipped kitchen. Fantastic! Like this. You can cook on this IH stove, so you can actually cook. And it’s Electrolux. What’s that? A famous appliance brand. Oh, got it. There’s a microwave too. Nice! A microwave! It’s a microwave-oven combo, actually. So, if you’re here with kids, you can make breakfast—super handy. True. We grilled steak that night and ate it hot right in the room. Being able to shape your time freely in your own way is such a perk. Also— another hallmark of a long-stay hotel: Ta-da! A proper drum-type washer. That’s a lifesaver. It dries, too. So nice. Laundry pods as well. Oh, you’re right. Excellent. Love it. And— the toilet paper is Premium Nepia. Never seen it. A new one for me. No idea, but it seems gentle on the bum. True. And the bath with a sky view— long enough to stretch your legs—lets your mind and body unwind. Amenities come in a stylish pouch, even including earplugs and an eye mask—fully stocked. Let’s hit the pool. Let’s go. From the room, they told us we can go in our gowns. So easy. So comfy! Wow. This is insane. Resort vibes! So resort! The resort feeling just flew right over there. Incredible. This is the family pool, so kids can use it too— there are shallow and deep areas. That upper area over there. From here it’s 20+ only? Yes! Adults-only beyond this point. Oh—wow. Amazing. Whoa! So cool! There’s a sauna over there. That looks awesome! I really want to do a löyly. Same! Let’s do it. A Sky-View Sauna where you can enjoy the scenery. The temperature is about 85°C. Do a self-löyly (steam infusion), get thoroughly heated, then dip straight into the pool. Relax on floating chairs by the water—pure grown-up indulgence. Is this okay? Will people like us less? Yeah, points might drop. Please watch with kind eyes this time… and let’s check out the super-Instagrammable poolside bar. Yum. This is— a frozen margarita. Very photogenic drink. The frozen part makes it so good. Totally. What about you, Ikeda? Beer. Delicious. Feels great. Yeah, it does. And guess what— right now it’s Sunset Hour, so all alcoholic drinks are half off. The best! Amazing. Two drinks then. Yes! Oh, right! Two drinks for the price of one. Here it is— garlic shrimp. So good. Garlic shrimp never fails. Delicious. Poolside garlic shrimp is insanely good. You don’t get this often. A first in my life. You don’t have many firsts at this age. So tasty. Yummy. So good. Traveling has taught me something: you make your own happiness. So true. After the pandemic, there was a time we couldn’t travel even if we wanted to. Yeah. That really changed us. It did. So when you can go—go have new experiences— it truly enriches your life. Exactly. When we can, we’ll travel and share it with everyone so you can enjoy it with us. Deep thoughts while peeling shrimp… Shall we sneak into the bar? Let’s hit the bar. Let’s go! Apparently open until 2 a.m. What!? Wow. Seriously. You could go even after sightseeing and coming back. True. Going further underground… It’s called “Red.” Oh—so cool. Total party vibe. Are we okay here? Will we be okay? I’m a little nervous. (Good evening.) Below ground is a hidden-away bar called “Red,” its red glow luring you into an extraordinary night. Over 200 kinds of gin and neon-green shisha— a night bar packed with playful, grown-up fun. What a space. You know, we don’t usually go out late. Yeah. So I feel fidgety. Like this— But there’s a sense of safety, since it’s a hotel bar. Exactly. You can relax and have fun. Right—feels safe to just enjoy ourselves. By the way, before it switches to “Red,” earlier in the evening it’s a proper classic bar, apparently. Oh, really? Here it comes! “Chotchu-ne.” That’s the catchphrase of Ishigaki-born boxing legend Yoko Gushiken—“chotchu-ne.” This one’s called “I’m Red,” apparently a heavy blend of multiple gins. That’s what he said. Yeah— “They blend from 200 kinds of gin,” he said. Let’s try it. Cheers! Delicious. Tastes like nothing I’ve had. At first sip it’s like coconut milk, then suddenly— like 40 aromas whoosh right through… Gushiken just passed through! That’s not how it works. Definitely not. Delicious! So good. You really feel the alcohol hit—wham. This one will get you tipsy fast. But also— Gushiken is here with us! Let’s try “I’m Red,” too. “I’m Red.” Whoa, delicious. This one’s probably strong, too. Tasty. So this is— gin and… lime? Definitely lime. No Gushiken in this one. Yeah, he didn’t step into the ring here. Didn’t enter the ring at all. Tonight, we’re at Fusaki Beach Resort. We’re here! Arguably the most popular resort on Ishigaki. When you think “resort hotel,” this is the one—the classic. Can’t wait. Let’s enjoy it. A vast resort hotel along Ishigaki’s west coast— Fusaki Beach Resort. The grounds span about 86,000 m², roughly the size of 2 Tokyo Domes. Beach, pools, dining, activities—and even a spa— everything you need is right on site: a true “all-in-one” resort. It’s huge. Just getting to the room feels like an adventure. There are carts to get from end to end, so you can ride around. Oh, nice. Very woodsy. Cute. Super clean. So pretty. Look at the ceiling— it’s like a cottage. Let’s check out the room. Let’s do it. The blue-and-wood palette is adorable overall. Love the beds, too. This is cute as well. There it is— separate tops and bottoms for the loungewear! That’s important. I love this. Two-piece sets! And different colors. Okay, so— I want to lie down and look up. Go ahead. Excuse me— Here we go. Ahh, nice. This angle alone screams “resort.” Let’s show everyone, too. Ta-daaan. I hope the vibe comes through. Do you feel it? And here— there’s this super stylish… something standing here. Are those the shampoos? Oh, right! Isn’t it chic? So stylish. And looks pricey. Omnisens. Never heard of it. For a commoner like me— Omnisens, from France. Still never heard of it. I’m a simple gal. Nice. You can feel the attention to detail. There’s a public bath on site, but the in-room bathroom is fully sufficient— with a little stool and wash bowl, great for families. Green view with plenty of privacy. Feels like the village is waking up. Totally. You could spend a whole day just walking around here. For sure. Strolling along the beach next to the resort. Feels so good. For a morning walk, this is seriously luxurious. We’re walking by the ocean, at 7 a.m. It’s only 7 a.m.! Gentle waves curl over our feet. It’s famous for sunsets, but dawn by the sea is just as beautiful. Now, let’s head to breakfast. They’ve called our turn, so let’s go. We took a little beach walk, but it’s good to draw a number first, then stroll. Yeah. Grab a ticket first—they ping your phone and you can walk around meanwhile. We booked for 7, but there were about 13 parties ahead. Crowded. As expected— this place is like a super-popular village. It really is a village. Totally. Breakfast at “Ryukyu Shintenchi” is a lavish buffet of Japanese, Western, Chinese—and of course Okinawan—dishes. About 80–90 items line the counters. Starting with salad. This is just Kate piling on her favorites today. Ah—!! I made a full lap of the stations. Marinated seafood. A little mix of everything. That seafood marinade looks great. Grated yam. Pea shoots. Nice. Top it with an egg— color it up! Congee! Plain white congee, turmeric congee, black rice congee— Black rice? Jade? Tomato congee. Looks tasty. Ooh—dōfu champuru. Firm island tofu is so good, right? Okay, Kate, from here I’ll grab my buffet plate too. Okay. Let’s each pick what we like and reconvene. Got it. Looks good. So good. Let’s eat. That was super luxurious. So lavish! Dig in. Dōfu champuru, carrot shirishiri, mimiga, pickled island vegetables, jellyfish, papaya salad— looks amazing. And then a bit of shumai and noodles— and this is… the signature kaisen-don. Seafood bowl! Clams, soy-marinated fish, and sea grapes. Did you assemble it yourself? I did. And congee. I was eyeing that. Black-rice congee with toppings— there are like 12–13 kinds to choose from, so you can build your own. Nice! Let’s eat. Delicious. So good. Since dinner is at the Chinese restaurant, even the small dishes here have Chinese accents. Love that. I’ll try the congee. Me too. Yum. Good? So tasty. Might be a genius combo. First I added chili oil, which gives a great spicy kick— then century egg and sea lettuce make this amazing harmony. Next up, the seafood bowl! I recognize the soy-marinated fish, and it said “chōju-gai.” “Chōju” as in “long life.” Delicious. Restaurant-quality—no different from a proper lunch out. What about you, Ikeda? Mine looks like this. Kind of… brown, huh? Thick-cut bacon, karaage, shumai— so extravagant. Very. And this— using mozuku seaweed to balance things— I see a last bit of conscience. You got me. Mozuku fixes everything, right? All that meat in the morning— mozuku erases the guilt. Exactly. With buffets, are you a one-and-done type, or a second-wave attacker? I scout the layout first. So you’re a location-scouting type. If you start grabbing what you see, it gets overwhelming at the end. Exactly. So I scout, set my targets, and try to finish in one trip. Fusaki Beach Resort has this relaxed, grown-up confidence. The way they use space, the sheer variety of food— the grounds scream “resort,” but the whole place seems to say, “Take it slow inside here.” I feel that too. Yeah. Heading to the pool. I can see the pool now. Wow! You can see the ocean, too. So spacious. Whoa. Amazing. It’s huge. Incredible. Look! It’s pools all the way to the back. So impressive. Let’s grab towels first. Let’s do that. Guests get wristbands, which you use to borrow towels. You can even reserve loungers with those towels. They’ve got banana boats out on the sea. Wow— we should try banana boats someday, or parasailing. Nice. You can do marine activities right from the hotel. “Aqua Garden,” one of the largest pool areas on Ishigaki, offers a variety of pools for both adults and kids to enjoy to the fullest. It feels incredible. It’s at that “slightly chilly, super refreshing” point. Luxury! They even manage the water temperature at Fusaki, keeping it optimal for the season. How is it, Kate? Then we walked down toward the ocean— let’s go. Feels great. So nice. Feels amazing. A stunning stretch of natural white sand runs for about 1 km. It’s heaven. We wander between the man-made and the natural— humans really do live indulgently. So—Which hotel would you pick? Tell us in the comments!
