TOKYO, Japan — Shanieka Ricketts failed to medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan after she finished fifth in the women’s triple jump with a jump of 14.56m (-0.2m/s).
This is the second World Athletics Championships in which the Jamaican has not secured her place on the podium since 2022. Ricketts, the Commonwealth Games champion in 2022, silver medallist at the Olympic Games in 2024 and two-time World Championships in 2019 and 2022, was also fourth in Budapest, Hungary in 2023.
She was well placed in third position after the first three rounds but was passed by Cuba’s Leyanis Perez Hernandez who won the gold medal with a world leading 14.94m (-0.3m/s) and Olympic Games champion Thea Lafond of Dominica who jumped a season’s best 14.89m (1.0m/s) in the final round to snatch the silver medal from Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas who had a season’s best 14.76m (0.3m/s) which saw her leading after the first round.
Ackelia Smith finished eighth with a best of 14.37m, her best result at the World Athletics Championships after placing 11th in 2022 in Eugene, Oregon and failing to get past the preliminaries in 2023.
