Okinawa Street Racing – 1988 Time Capsule
Real VHS footage from Okinawa, 1988 — documenting the underground street racing scene.
This kind of racing was part of the hashiriya culture that swept Japan in the 80s—especially in places like Okinawa, where U.S. military presence and limited legal racing venues pushed it into the shadows.
This was filmed the same year Shuto Kōsoku Trial hit Japanese video stores—a cult film that captured this same energy. But this? This is real.
🎥 Part of my time capsule series preserving youth culture, analog footage, and VHS memories from Japan in the 70s–90s.
I’m sharing select, edited clips from a student-created VHS tape shared in 1988. My goal is to have a time capsule as part of a preservation series — highlighting student life, hangouts, and memorable places from that time.
This clip has been digitized, edited, and shared for historical preservation, commentary, and cultural memory under fair use. The original audio has been replaced to respect copyright, and no commercial use is intended. If you are the original creator or participant and wish to connect or discuss its use, please comment or contact me directly.
This is part of my personal time capsule project, preserving old footage and memories of life in Okinawa.

Anyone know what kind of car is the second one?
Way before my time lol. I'm searching for any footage I can get to see what it was like.
