The Nintendo Switch 2 has crossed a major sales milestone in Japan, surpassing two million units sold just 14 weeks after launch. This achievement makes it the second fastest-selling gaming system in the country’s history, trailing only the Game Boy Advance, which reached the same figure in 13 weeks.
According to newly compiled hardware sales data, the Switch 2’s early momentum places it ahead of several legendary systems. The PlayStation 2 reached two million in 15 weeks, while the Nintendo DS and Wii took 18 and 19 weeks, respectively. By comparison, older platforms like the SEGA Mega Drive and PC Engine required several years to reach the same milestone.
Looking at total sales after the first 14 weeks, the Switch 2 again ranks just behind the Game Boy Advance. Nintendo’s latest hybrid console has sold 2,025,761 units to date, compared with the Game Boy Advance’s 2,137,065 units. The Nintendo DS (1,876,155 units), PlayStation 2 (1,793,715 units), and Wii (1,752,238 units) make up the rest of the top five.
The Switch 2’s performance also highlights the evolution of Nintendo’s hardware success. Its predecessor, the original Switch, sold 911,776 units during the same 14-week period, placing it 9th on the list. Systems such as the Super Famicom and PlayStation Portable also fall behind the Switch 2’s trajectory, underlining the strong demand for the new device.
With momentum on its side, the Switch 2 is positioned as one of the most successful console launches in Japanese history. While it narrowly missed the top spot held by the Game Boy Advance, its strong early adoption suggests it could rival Nintendo’s past record-breaking hardware over the long term.
