Meeting explored opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation and exchange expertise in the areas of innovation, infrastructure and sustainable solutions
During his visit to Japan, His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, has met with His Excellency Takatoshi Nishiwaki, Governor of Kyoto Prefecture.
The meeting explored opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation and exchange expertise in the areas of innovation, infrastructure, sustainable solutions and other sectors of shared strategic priority, in support of advancing sustainable development.
Sheikh Khaled attended the meeting with the Governor of Kyoto alongside His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Tahnoon bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Court; His Excellency Mohammed Ali Al Shorafa, chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport; and His Excellency Saif Saeed Ghobash, secretary-general of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Chairman of the Office of the Crown Prince.
The delegation also included Her Excellency Maryam Eid AlMheiri, chairperson of the Abu Dhabi Media Office and advisor of strategic relations at the Crown Prince Court, and His Excellency Shihab Ahmed Al Faheem, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the UAE to Japan and commissioner general of the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka.

The meeting took place during Sheikh Khaled’s visit to Japan to attend the UAE Pavilion’s celebration of UAE Day at Expo 2025 Osaka. The UAE Pavilion will celebrate UAE Day on Friday, September 19, as part of events and programs scheduled at the expo.
The UAE is participating in Expo 2025 Osaka, running until 13 October 2025 under the theme From Earth to Ether. The UAE Pavilion features an innovative and sustainable design inspired by the palm tree; a symbol of profound cultural and heritage significance deeply rooted in the Emirati identity.
The UAE Day celebration is part of the Expo 2025 Osaka agenda, highlighting the pavilion’s immersive multisensory journey, from the UAE’s rich heritage to its pioneering innovations in space exploration, healthcare, and sustainable technology. The UAE’s participation also reflects the depth of the bilateral relations between the UAE and Japan across various fields.

UAE and Japan strengthen ties in key areas
Earlier this year, Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, conducted an official working visit to Japan from April 13 to 16. During his visit, he chaired the second ministerial meeting of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and held several bilateral meetings with Japanese government officials and private sector partners, with the attendance of Shihab Ahmed Al Fahim, UAE Ambassador to Japan.
The ministerial meeting reviewed updates on the implementation of joint projects, programs and initiatives and explored opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation in various fields of mutual interest. The two sides co-chaired the second ministerial meeting of the partnership, with working groups presenting outcomes in key areas, including trade, investment, energy and industry.
Discussions between the UAE and Japan focused on opportunities for economic cooperation in vital sectors such as trade, investment, energy, renewable energy, industry and advanced technology, to serve mutual interests and promote sustainable economic growth in both countries.
The visit came as the total trade volume between the two countries reached about $49.6 billion in 2024, including oil-related products, while non-oil trade amounted to around $17.5 billion, marking a slight growth of 1.2 percent compared to 2023. With that, the UAE remains Japan’s top trading partner among GCC countries in terms of imports and exports, receiving 52 percent of Japan’s exports to GCC countries. Meanwhile, Japan is the UAE’s 9th largest global trading partner.
