Our Trip to Shimoda, Japan on the Izu Coast

Today’s adventure takes us to the stunning coastal town of Shimoto, Japan. This is the best day ever. Let’s live here. We kick things off with a ride on the famous Shimoto ropeway to Mount Nessugata. Holy smokes. I want to live up here. Where we were treated to stunning panoramic views, fairy tale gardens, and a few chances at good fortune. For lunch, we had what could be the best fish dish we’ve had in 5 years of travel. The moment we’ve been waiting for, baby. And of course, we couldn’t leave Shimoto without feeling the sand beneath our toes. Oh my, it was so cold. But getting there, well, that turned out to be a bit bit more of an adventure than we originally expected. I don’t have time to get lost. A very interesting path. Thanks, Google Maps. That is one of the most beautiful views I think we’ve ever woken up to. Now, the state of our room after three loads of laundry last night. Well, that’s just an entirely different story. Open. Oh, nailed it. Look how beautiful it is. It’s so nice the weather. Don’t want to overstate this, but this weather’s amazing. We got in yesterday like 3:00. We had this like glimmer of how beautiful it could be here because this is definitely not peak season, but a storm was rolling through. So, it was incredibly windy, overcast, and a little chilly. So, to have this this morning, it’s like just incredible. The decision to come to Shimoda really just came down to the fact that we spent the last seven days in Tokyo and we originally going to go to Hiroshima during this time, but Tokyo was so busy and so fast-paced that we just kind of wanted to slow it down and see nature here in Japan because we knew it was beautiful and one stop and that’s been proven right to us. And the area we’re staying in is just breathtaking. Like the cliffsides very much remind me of Bali and like Phuket in Thailand. The water is so blue that I want to just jump in. Even though I know it’s freezing cold because it’s just that time of year right now. But for the first time also in a week, I can I can hear birds. I can hear the wind. And we’ve been outside for 15 minutes and I’ve only seen two people aside from Alicia. That’s pretty cool. It was funny you said aside from Alicia though. I mean, you’re the only person I ever see. [Music] [Music] You got it. Yeah. Could just destroy your morning like losing your drone first thing. We decided on the Hotel Tokyo because of its location and its views. We’re actually deciding between two different room types. The sea view room or the balcony room. Normally I really like balcony, but it didn’t have views and we chose a C view room. And I’m so glad we did because look at this. This is gorgeous. But also like look at these palm trees and then like pine trees because the weather here gets so warm but yet so cold. So it can hold both of those trees just fine. I don’t think that’s something I’ve ever seen. And they have this olive tree that was planted here from the Vatican by the Pope himself. We’ve been to the Vatican and we’ve actually seen the Pope one time. We almost missed him and Alicia was very upset, but then he appeared again. It was a very cool moment. So, the fact that he was standing right where we are right now, I don’t know. That always feels like something special. Are you okay? What happened? I don’t know. We’re going to sit on this bench and eat our PBJs that we got from Lawson’s last night because I think the Pope probably sat here too, but I doubt he was eating a PBJ from Lawson’s. Look at this peanut butter cream. Looks good. It’s delicious. Okay, so when we were driving up in a taxi last night from the station to the hotel, we were a little worried because it was like all uphill. So, we were thinking of how are we going to get to the city and then how are we going to get back? But turns out uh it’s very easy walk down like 30 minutes to the city and then they actually have a shuttle that goes from the station to the hotel thereby taking away all the uphill battle that we would have to do. So, we’re going to go get that. It’s 10:20 and we’re going to get some [Music] bikes. All right, we made it down to the station. It only took like 10 minutes because it’s all downhill. Uh, we were going to rent bikes right away for the day, but we thought before we have to worry about locking bikes up, we should take the Shimoto ropeway first. Alicia’s smarter than I am. Oh, look at this fun little walkway. Oh, look at that dog. Definitely not real that one. Hello. For two. All right, the ropeway only runs on a scheduled time. It’s not like continuous. So, this one’s at 11. And I guess we’re all just going in the one. [Music] Holy smokes. Three and a half minute cable ride and you get a great view of Shimoto Bay. That’s an understatement. I don’t know why, but I’m kind of amazed at some of the places that the cherry blossoms bloom from. Look at this one just like on this teeny tiny corner of this branch and nowhere else. Okay, look at this hawk just going mad crazy over here. Look at that cute little gazebo down there. Oh my gosh. Good lord. That crow is huge. It really is like the largest crow I’ve ever seen. It’s kind of freaking me out. It’s a pirate ship. It’s probably just a fairy to be honest. So, the black ship we saw out in the harbor here is a recreation of the original black ship that the captain, guess what his name is? Matthew Perry. Get out of here. Yeah. His name was Matthew Perry. and he arrived in this harbor in 1854 in his black ships and signed the convention of Kanagawa which opened up Japan to the west for the first time. So this is kind of like a really important place in Japanese history. [Music] Goldfish are so pretty. Their back fins are like so majestic. They are. Look at this. This is like very white compared to the others. Isn’t it crazy that goldfish get so big? Yes. Selfies. Maybe everywhere. So pretty. It’s gorgeous. Good luck comes when you rub Bri’s fist. The harder you rub, the more luck you get. Wow. New York City. What the heck? It’s kind of cool. Are you ever getting out of there? Yeah. Oh, look at these big oranges. Oh my gosh. They work. They cost money. So, the luck hasn’t kicked in yet? No. Please. Thank you. Oh, this is pretty. Made it up to the top of the viewpoint. There’s like a whole route that you can take and there’s this beautiful temple overlooking the bay and there’s a couple little things that you can do up here. Okay, this is called a nagita. It’s like a little clay ball that was flattened with a stamp on it. And what you do is you throw it at the shrine that’s right over here. And if it’s just one person throwing it, you throw it through the very center and try to hit the rock. If it’s two people like us, we throw it through each side of the circles and then you try to hit the rock at the same time. It’s supposed to bring like good fortune for marriage and fertility and a good child birth. So, I’m trying to get married here. I’ll throw with my left hand. I’m just kidding. I’ll throw with my right and I’ll do my best. But it’s also better if it hits a stone after it goes through the ring. It has. Yeah, it has to. I don’t think it has to. I think if you get it through the ring, it’s good. I think if it hits a stone afterwards, it’s like extra. Oh, yeah. Immediately after going through the ring, if the ball hits the stone, it can make you even more harmonious and peaceful. H. But look, it says right here, you throw Nagumi Dama to pass through the ring and hit against the stone. Yeah, that’s the goal. I see. I see. Okay, ready. Oh, sometimes I just love that I can catch her consistent doubt in me on camera. It’s wonderful. So, each throwing one separately. If you have two people out of rings, you have one person in a ring, much smaller. Um, growing up, like when I stopped playing basketball for the day, I always had to make like a really good last shot. So, I’m not going to lie, I only have one of these and I feel I feel a little bit of pressure to make this. Okay. I don’t think any of it makes a difference. Ready? Mhm. That was so bad. That was, you know what that was like? That was like my Trevy Fountain throw a couple years back. I close my eyes. Yeah. Oh, I missed. Ready? Okay. Yeah. On the count of three. Go ahead. Okay. One, two, three. Mine was perfect. Yours was absolutely perfect. Mine not so much. So, you’ll have more harmony than me. Yeah. Oh, you’re so lucky. All right, take two. Okay. Did you get yours through the ring? At least I did get it through the ring, but it definitely fell short. Okay, ready? One, two, three. Oh, I didn’t even get mine through the ring this time. I did. I feel like since the goal is peace, probably should have acted like we’ve actually done this before when we made it through and hit the rock. However, I did see another couple that was local and they did hit it and they got excited. So, I feel like it is it’s okay. I hope we never ever want to be disrespectful. So, really hoping that’s okay. Let’s move on. Yeah, we should. Yeah. Okay. Okay. We just came in this little place and it’s like a picnic spot, so you’re away from the wind overlooking the bay. But they have these little they’re called aendos. I think you put your wish or your prayer or your desire on it and they’re all tied up outside. So we’ve got one. It’s 500 yen and we got the couple one so there’s room for two names on here. I love that you can tell like some of these have been out here for a while though cuz the wood’s different colors. Yeah. Where should we put it? Wherever you feel in your heart we should be. Let’s go. right here. Here we are. Look at this beautiful tree. Oh my goodness. It’s so colorful in Japan. It’s just unbelievable. It’s so like fluffy. I feel like I’m just going to get yellow all over me. It’s so pretty. I want to live up here. That would be epic. I have to say, I don’t think either of us intended to be up here this long. It’s Yeah, it’s 12:40. Um, we might have to get those bikes for only 2 hours by the time we actually get there. I know. Which would be fine. We were going to get them all day, but yeah, you just get entranced up here and then 2 hours later you’re like, “Wow, still up here.” But now we’re going back mostly because the hunger pangs. Actually, all because of the hunger pangs. I’m going to eat some fish. Nice. [Music] [Music] All right, we made it down. We’re going to grab some lunch. I think one of the things I really liked about that cable car was there was no bad view in there. Sometimes you get in these really big ones and like everybody rushes to the best side, but there’s pretty good views all around. A lot more people coming down though than going up when we went. So, apparently we’re early risers at 10:30. We found him. He’s so cute. The cutest dog in Shimoda. So adorable. I just want to pet you. I love it. You’re not much of a guard dog. You’re too cute. Just sitting there so calm. So adorable. We really couldn’t afford that delay. The place we’re going to closes at 2:00. And we’ve noticed in Japan that last call for food is usually like 30 minutes prior to close. It’s 1:15. Hello. They didn’t look open, but they are. Oh, it smells so good in here. Look at this place. You comfy? Yeah. All right. How long ago was it? We were in Korea for the first time. Like 2 years ago, I think. 2 years ago. We were in Korea and we came to a restaurant where I need to sit down on the floor and just this this is painful. I was illprepared for that moment. So I vowed I will start stretching and sitting on the floor and I can do this comfortably. And I did keep that very promised myself. Until we came on this trip four weeks ago, I haven’t stretched for more than 10 seconds. And uh I think I have I’ve relapsed on stretching. And I’m so grateful for this wall behind me. But if it wasn’t there, I’d literally just be lying on the ground right now. We came to Goro Saiya. It’s like one of the most recommended places here to try some locally caught seafood. Um, we’re on the ocean, so we’re going to get some good seafood. I hope I got the broiled course. It comes with like so many things. So, I just got one to share. I got the falling apart over here. I really need this wall. I’m so grateful for this wall. You weren’t supposed to look. I failed. Okay. Completely failed myself. Ooh, that looks lovely. This is warm. Really warm. No, it’s definitely egg. [Music] It’s really good. It just tastes like um omelette almost with onions. There’s I was like I taste like ham or some sort of meat smokiness in there. Yeah. And there is some There’s this I don’t know what that is. Maybe it’s fish. Oh, it could be fish. But definitely adds some smokiness to the egg. I’m like 85% sure it’s tuna. Okay. This definitely smells like seafood. I’m not going to lie, it looks a little scary to me, but it looks literally like tantrilla legs to me. Pretty like flavorless. I think this is fruit. Oh, it’s like pickled. I moved again. I hope it’s okay that I use this chair. It’s much more comfortable for me. You look like such a giant child. I mean, it’s pretty fitting, wouldn’t you say? Okay, our main course came. We got a whole fish half the size of this plate. Do you eat the skin? Ah, it’s so bubbled. I would think so. And then the other piece is yellowtail neck. Oh my god. Wow. [Music] Oh my god. This might be the best fish I’ve ever had. Really? It’s so good. The broiled skin layer with the lemon juice. I’m not even kidding right now. This is phenomenal. Wow. You got to get a bite of this. Wa. That was delicious. That is like the definition of melty in your mouth. And it doesn’t even like Man, I don’t know. That is wonderful. Here’s a piece of skin. Isn’t that amazing? Oh my gosh. I mean this in the best way possible. Like you can taste the grill on that. Feel like we’re taking a bite out of the grill. This is honestly mind-blowing. And initially Alicia is like, “Can I eat the skin?” Yes. Yeah, the skin is like the best part by far and away. I think this one we just got to be a little careful with the bones together over here. But I will be careful. M. Mhm. I think I think I have like a bone in my mouth. I don’t want to get it out, but you’re filming me. Got it. I don’t know how you eat fish with chopsticks. So, anytime that there’s bone in a fish, Alicia very sweetly goes through the whole thing to pull out the bones and just leave the meat for both of us, but probably more for me cuz apparently I’m like five. I really like the pace of our day today. Yeah, me too. I’m telling you, it’s cuz of all those activities at the shrine. Very interactive. I don’t think there’s any bones there, but they’re so small. Who knows? Bone. Mhm. They’re tiny. Why do you sound so like happy about that? No, they’re just so small. They have the smallest piece and I didn’t think I’d get a bone, but I did. Did you just swallow it? I don’t know. Maybe. It’s very tasty. Like very fresh tasting. That being said, trying it second to the yellow tail. The yellow tail was just like so good. Like I’d probably just order more yellow tail. Is that even an option? I don’t think so. It’s not an option. But if I could, I would order like two, three, four, I don’t know, seven yellow tails because they’re that good. Yum. Very excited about that. Sticky [Music] rice. Man, I love miso soup. So like salty and umami flavored. How about a nice mixed bite? Chopsticks are hard. M. I forgot how good it was. We got dessert of some sort. This is some sort of gelatin with fruit in it. I think I was going to say, did you know that jello? I forget the word for it, but there’s like a word for something that people call the item by the brand name. Like jacuzzi. Jello Kleenex. Jacuzzi. Yeah, Jello is one of them. M. Oh, there’s like a mandarin orange in there. Very tasty. I think it’s just a texture thing for me with the Jell-O. Delicious place, delicious food. I hope you get the yellow shell neck when you order the food because it’s a surprise. It’s whatever’s in season, whatever they got today. M amazing. Thank you so much. Have a good day. Thank you. It’s beautiful outside. Forgot about outside for some reason. Great pick. Thank you. Loved it. I love Shimoda. Was that the name of the restaurant? No, it’s the name of the city. Oh, the city. Shimona. I’m embarrassed. I forgot that. Gosh, what is wrong with me? Look, all these places are closed. Or maybe it’s just cuz it’s Sunday. Could be Sunday. Oh, good. I’m glad they’re still open. It is very pretty stuff, though. I’ll say that. It’s cool, isn’t it? Before you go in, what are you looking for? Anything. I like these though. Yeah, they’re like less than a dollar. Anything for you? Just trying to keep it in since we agreed on that today. Trying to keep it what? Peace and harmony. Did you just break something? No. No. Okay, good. Let’s get ice cream. Ice cream? Yeah. Okay. Peace and [Music] harmony. I got the bamboo charcoal black ice cream and the banana shake for you. What? I’m going to love it. super torn. At least I got like what this ice cream stand is known for. But I was debating between a chocolate banana shake and a black sesame shake. I felt like in the name of adventure, I should have gotten the black sesame shake, but I love banana and I love chocolate, so that’s what I got. I believe your home your ice cream is homemade. That’s awesome. That’s so cool. [Applause] Wow. I got those. Oh my gosh. Bamboo, charcoal, vanilla. M. Melting. Mhm. It really does tastes like vanilla ice cream, but it’s gray. M. Delicious soft serve ice cream. This is fun. Just like the black ship that we saw earlier today. That’s why it’s all black. It is literally melting so bad, though. Oh my gosh, it’s so bad. All right, Alicia’s falling apart in front of me. I haven’t even tried mine, but this stuff melts fast. I also did not expect for it to be hand mixed. No blender involved in my shake. Woah, so good. So much more banana than chocolate than I was expecting. It tastes like a banana Laffy Taffy and like a small hint of chocolate. She also threw some cereal in there. I’m pretty excited about that. We’re a disaster right now. Well, you’re definitely the weakest link right now. You like can’t even enjoy it. Are you ready? No. I literally unzipped this little wet wipe and it just went like I tore it and went through it halfway across this patio. I have never seen such a messy ice cream cone. Are my teeth black? No. M. Very banan. Wo. A banana Laffy Taffy. That’s what I said. Really? Was that the craziest you ever felt during an ice cream cone? Yeah, normally I’m not the one who’s making a disaster. Nate drooled on himself today. That was out of bounds. There’s definitely no real banana in this shake, but I am a big fan of the cereal part. Is it like special K? It’s like chocolate special K. It’s delicious. It’s easily the best part of the shake. It’s 3:15. We thought we were going to be renting these bikes probably, I don’t know, 5 hours ago. But here we are, and the shortest rental is 2 hours, and that’s really all we have left before they close at 5:30. This rental bicycle is operated by application for use. After confirming the terms and conditions, please receive your bicycle keys and helmet. They have ebikes. Oh, they do? You’re right. That’s okay. We’ll return at 5 today. Number eight or nine. Okay, perfect. Please put the bicycle where it was and bring it here as much as possible. Okay. Yes. Yes. Okay. Arato. Thank you. We have an hour and a half. This is going to be fast. I have to say we did ride ebikes really recently in Seoul and I’m glad we did now because before that we never had and we had no idea how to use them. But I feel like the rush that we’re in right now, this is a good thing. Here we go. Ow. Woohoo. [Music] That’s so fun, man. This thing can move. [Music] Oh. Ow. What’s wrong? I just scraped my foot on the ground. That’s what happened to me. Why can’t helmets look cooler? I don’t know. I think that’s why they put the spikes on them. But did you know that that’s for like birds that attack while you’re on bike? Yeah. What? I think in Australia birds will actually attack you while you’re riding a bike. So, they wear the spikes on them. Horrible. It’s [Music] somewhere. I’m a little out of breath. Yeah, me too. Coming down hot on your side. Whoa. Sorry. Oh my gosh. I can see it. Oh. Right. Right. No way. No way. We’re going to walk it here. Is this right? Whatever your directions say. This is a very interesting path. Questionable. Unless it’s just like right through here. It’s not. Oh gosh. You okay? Yeah. Can we try to get the bikes over here? Or we could leave him here and lock him. We’re not that close. I think you’ll be able to roll it up over there. There you go. Got it. Yeah, that went way better than I expected to be honest. Hold on. I’ll come up. My shoes are destroyed, by the way. Ow. This thing is so sharp. Oh, yeah, it is. Are you okay? Oh, yeah. Okay, one down. That was good. That was good. That was a lot smoother than I expected. So, I’m pretty sure this is exactly what they didn’t want us to do with these things. Oh gosh. I am slippy. Okay. You got it. Are you okay? Yeah. No, that’s not your bike, is it? Yeah, it is. You just threw mine on the ground. Yeah, I set it down very nicely. Okay, let’s go. We don’t have that much time. All right, we’re back on the road. Oh, yeah. Ebike, baby. I cannot believe that was a road. Am I going to lie? This hill scares me a little. Yeah, cuz we have to come back up it. That I don’t worry about as much. Oh my gosh. Well, that was not 17 minutes. I don’t like to use the front brake because that’s that’s where you can get in trouble sometimes. Oh, bug. Holy cow. Almost there. It’s 4:00. We’re still doing well on pace for 30 minutes to get here. Hey, would you look at that? A beach. We did it. Just a little bit closer. And we’re here now. Ah, got it. Got it. Yeah. The moment we’ve been waiting for, baby. [Music] Close. So close. So close. All right, we’re ready. Yeah. Oh my gosh, that’s so cold. So, this is Sura Beach. Isn’t it pretty? But we touched the Pacific Ocean. Yes. In Japan. [Music] Huh? Well, it’s 4:26 and we have an alarm that’s going to go off at 4:27 so that we can get back to our bike rental on time. Really enjoyed our day here. So, everywhere we went, we just kept staying longer and longer. I forgot the tripod down there. Sorry. Whoopsies. This is the first dog I’ve gone for in a long time. Hello. Oh, hi. Oh, I love you. Oh, you’re so sweet. Oh my gosh. So soft. So, what’s their name? Hannah. Hannah. Hannah. A hi, Hannah. I love how she just stopped. I know. She’s like, “No, no, we’re going to sit here for a couple minutes.” You got a nice big walk, huh? So happy. Thank you, Rato. That was so freaking cute. Oh, she’s getting treats. Yeah, look at She’s like, “Look, Mom. Did you see what I did? I sat so nicely. I love it. We’re just in this tiny little town and I could live here.” Like, people are so nice. Everyone we’ve passed, we’ve said Konichiwa, too, and they’re like, “Konichiwa, let’s live here. Let’s do it. Let’s go to door to door and see if there’s any rentals.” Well, I was going to get up, but that dog stopped. Hannah alone worth the bike drive. No, Hannah alone worth the bike ride. Time to get back. Oh my gosh. I have no idea. I don’t think we’re gonna make it. We’re going to make it. Good vibes. Good vibes only. My gosh. The consequence of not making it on time is not only renting this thing for an entire day, but if you keep it overnight, they charge you for two days since it’s on two different days that you have the bike. Really just not not ideal. Not ideal. So really that would be like four times as much as we’re paying right now. Four times as much for an hour and a half anyways. Hoping to make it back, needless to say. Okay. You good? Yeah. I just want to make sure I don’t scratch this. I’m going to unlock the bikes. So that’s cool. Thanks, Google Maps. You the best. Oh my gosh. It’s the freaking way we went. Yeah, that’s what I thought it was going to be. Yeah. So, this is the this is the other side of that tunnel. Oh, cool. Oh, no. With the cobwebs. Yeah. That is where we were trying to go. It says keep taking here to get to the beach. But there’s a lot of spiderw webs on that. And uh thanks to Alicia’s mom, she is also scared of spiders. So, there’s absolutely zero chance of convincing her to go through that. Why would it take us this way? I can’t even pedal. How did you pedal? You got up here. Woo! Yeah, just a bridge, huh? And a little bit of Whoa! I almost went into the river here. Doing great, love. 4 minutes away. 4 minutes. Yeah. Oh, man. We got this. Yeah, we do. Rushed it. Ow. I just tore my shoe again. Don’t wear pointed flats when riding bikes. Oh. [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. I can’t believe we just saw that dog in its car. Yeah, we’ve seen that dog in its car and in the store twice. It is a small town home stretch. Made it by an absolute mile. I wouldn’t say a mile. Everybody is closing. 5:00 p.m. is closing time. I’m pretty sure no train station traffic comes in. That’s probably another reason. And even parking lots for the beach close at 5. Crossing. Hurry. us. Oh my gosh. And the bike shop closed at 5:00, which is why we made it back at 4:53. Holy cow, we did it. Alicia loves stress, too. The day was so great, minus the stress of getting back. Big old U-turn. There’s a train conductor. Going to welcome the last passengers of the day. It looks like we did it. And my phone didn’t die. Do I have a light on? Yeah. Hi, Tak. Oh, helmet. I I really like it. I guess I want to go home with it. Orato. Very kind. Thank you. One. Should I take give you both? No. Okay. Sara. We did it. We did it, babes. And you have the hair to show it. Okay. We think we saw something breach the water and we’re just about to leave. It looks like something like, I don’t know, a dolphin or a whale. But there’s also a sizable chance that it is just a rock. So Alicia is investigating the matter further. It’s definitely just a rock. What? It’s a rock. That’s it. Yep. Oh, what a bummer. All right, bring the room back. Yeah. Look at this bee. Wildly beautiful. Hi. Oh, it said hi to me. Did you see that? Yeah, definitely saw the wave. Oh, now it’s gone. Oh. Oh my gosh. They’re fighting for your love. I’m used to that. I should probably get in this fight, but uh they could probably beat
