INPEX and Kyoto University to Establish Endowed Program on Energy Resources Development Engineering for Realizing Carbon Neutral
Society
TOKYO, JAPAN – INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX) and Kyoto University announced they will jointly establish the endowed program “INPEX Energy Resources Development Engineering for Realizing Carbon Neutral Society” on October 1, 2025. The program is intended to promote a carbon neutral society and stable energy supply in Japan. Program participants will conduct the research and development of energy resources development engineering needed to realize carbon neutrality and foster human resources that can play an active role in this field.
Background and purpose of establishing the program
Energy is essential to our daily lives and corporate activities. Global energy consumption is expected to increase with economic and population growth. Securing a stable supply of energy is a material issue. On the other hand, dependence on fossil energy leads to an increase in the atmospheric concentration of CO2, which is considered one of the main factors causing global warming.
The world’s dependence on fossil fuels remains high, and it is necessary to simultaneously promote stable energy supply and decarbonization. To achieve this, INPEX and Kyoto University will jointly promote R&D and develop human resources versed in key technologies such as carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCS/CCUS), underground hydrogen storage technology required to build the foundations of a hydrogen society, environmentally friendly, efficient enhanced oil and gas recovery technology and carbon recycling technology that will contribute to stable energy supply.
