Japan: A Promising New Market for Las Vegas Aviation

James Chrisley, recently appointed as the senior director of aviation for Clark County, Las Vegas, is advocating for the establishment of direct flight routes connecting Las Vegas and Japan. He believes that tapping into Japan’s market presents a significant opportunity to attract more international visitors to the city.

Past and Potential Air Connections Between Las Vegas and Japan

Building on recent successes such as Aer Lingus launching flights between Dublin and Las Vegas and Air France’s trial service from Paris, Chrisley is focusing on reintroducing service to Japan—a market which had brief direct connections in the late 1990s. Previously, nonstop flights were operated by Northwest Orient, which later merged with Delta Air Lines, offering twice-weekly Boeing 747 flights between Tokyo and Las Vegas. Japan Airlines also ran a similar route during that time, but the demand then was insufficient for both airlines to sustain the route.

With over two decades since those services ended, renewed interest is arising, especially as MGM Resorts International develops a casino resort in Osaka. Experts are now exploring the feasibility of a direct flight link between Japan and Las Vegas. Currently, Korean Air stands as the only airline providing nonstop service between Asia and Las Vegas, connecting Seoul to Reid International Airport daily.

Enhancing Passenger Experience at Reid International Airport

In addition to pursuing new international flights, Chrisley is focusing on improving amenities for travelers at Reid International Airport. One of his key initiatives involves expanding passenger lounges to meet soaring demand. The recent opening of the Capital One lounge in the D gates quickly drew large crowds, highlighting how much travelers value these spaces.

Looking forward, plans include the introduction of a Chase Sapphire Lounge in the C gates by year-end and an innovative Amex “sidecar lounge” adjacent to the existing American Express lounge at the D gates. Chrisley describes this new lounge concept as exciting and tailored to meet travelers’ high expectations.

Furthermore, airlines are actively negotiating for additional lounge space within the airport to increase beyond the six lounges currently available, reflecting a broader trend toward enhancing passenger comfort and satisfaction.
