The bowing deer of Nara, these deer are free to roam around the city but mostly stay in the park where people feed them crackers. The deer are so polite like the Japanese people and they’ll bow so you will give them a treat.
Although we learned quickly that they’re not that polite, they’re actually pretty pushy and demanding. They even fight for attention and food, and they’ll head bump and chase you down if you’re not feeding them fast enough.
All of this made for such a fun couple of hours, it was pretty hilarious getting chased, and filming it as well. I’ve seen many YouTuber friends of mine come see the deer in Nara so when we decided to visit Kyoto and Osaka, I knew we’d have to make a stop to see them.
It’s pretty easy to get to the park, since we had the JR pass we went to the JR Nara station, found the #2 yellow city bus which was 210 yen each way. Once we saw the park with deer we got off the bus, it took about 10 minutes. Then going back just hop on the #1 yellow city bus which will take you back to the JR Nara station.
If you’re in the area, you must stop and feed the deer, it’s so much fun!
