Though the summer humidity and heat seem to be never-ending on mainland Japan, small signs of the forthcoming autumn are starting to spring up.
I am looking forward to enjoying colorful chrysanthemums and uniquely shaped bright reddish higanbana or manjushage (spider lilies) coming into full bloom all around the mainland.
Starting in late September, you’ll find stunning spider lilies sprouting up in surprising spots. Keep your eyes peeled for them on walks, in temple gardens, various parks or even cemeteries around your neighborhood.

There are many places to go to enjoy the crimson beauties within the Kanto Plain. Eishoji Temple in Kamakura City is one of the most popular spots for fall flower viewing.
The elegant temple founded in 1636, is home to refined wooden temple buildings and a bell tower that are designated as National Important Cultural Assets. The temple is also known for its large variety and population of flowers in the garden, which attract visitors throughout the year.
Walking in the scenic temple field in this season lets you enjoy a unique view of hundreds of bright reddish spider lilies against the backdrop of classical temple buildings and bell tower.

If you’re near Yokota Air Base, you’re even luckier.
Kinchakuda Park in Saitama is only a 45-minute drive from Yokota and is home to about five million spider lilies.
The park is surrounded by beautiful green forest and sits along the Koma River making it a great spot for an early fall stroll.
As of Sept. 11, the spider lilies have not bloomed yet at Eishoji and Kinchakuda Park. Check the park websites before your visit to make sure the spider lilies are ready.
Just a little more summer and it will be time again for fall!
