Japan-Papua New Guinea relations are a strong, decades-long partnership built on significant economic ties, development aid, and mutual political support. Established at PNG’s independence in 1975, the relationship has seen Japan become a key development partner, providing substantial aid and investing in infrastructure. In return, PNG supports Japan in international forums.

Recent high-level exchanges and new security cooperation initiatives aim to deepen this relationship, focusing on trade, investment, and PNG’s goal of downstream resource processing.
