The recent “wellness journey” sometimes feels like a contradiction. This is because the core of wellness is persistence, but travel is finite. Even if you leave for Southeast Asian beaches or Hawaii and seek health in nature, you must eventually return to your daily routine of waiting for work.
If you’ve had any experience of travelling away to recharge returning to a greater sufferer, let’s note. We introduce a new wellness spot to address this contradiction. The city is often considered “the number one city that the Japanese want to live in the most” with both accessibility and the relaxation of the port city, which takes 30 minutes by train from Tokyo, Japan. It’s Yokohama.

Yokohama, a port city in Kanagawa Prefecture, is home to a variety of companies, including Nissan Motor’s headquarters, but there are many green spaces as well as the sea, so it has a strong impression of a “people’s place” rather than a hard feeling. Yokohama is a travel destination and extremely everyday space, as represented by the combination of the blue sea and skyline.

Three years ago, Marriott International opened the wellness hotel “The Westin Yokohama.” Can the wellness experienced in a city where the boundaries between travel and daily life are blurred continue after the trip is over. Here is a review of Westin Yokohama’s stay, which I visited with high expectations.

Westin Yokohama (hereinafter referred to as Westin) is located in Minatomirai 21 District, an office complex. A sailboat-shaped exterior and a green hotel from the entrance stand out among the forest of buildings. As soon as you enter the lobby, the refreshing scent of “White Tea,” the hotel’s iconic scent, welcomes guests.

The reception is on the 23rd floor, the highest floor. When the elevator door opens, you can see downtown Yokohama and Mount Fuji in the distance through an open window. It serves as an observation deck without admission fees. The trip starts even before you check in.

Westin designed the hotel by applying the nature-friendly concept of “biophilia.” One wall of the reception is full of green plants and even an indoor garden has been built. The curved wooden chandelier covering the ceiling is based on the motif of the ‘forest bath’ that started in Japan.

The nature-friendly elements of the Westin are found throughout the hotel. In Japan, the sunshine that swirls through the leaves is called ‘Komorebi (こもれび). It is somewhat unfamiliar in Korean, but there is an expression called ‘sunshine’. Westin’s room entrance and the lighting in front of the elevator represented this very sun. A light in the shape of a shadow of a tree that is as subtle as a sunflower that is easy to miss if you don’t give it a glance. As such, the nature of the hotel is calm and comfortable rather than grand.

The calm atmosphere of the hotel continues in the room. Wood-toned furniture and amber lights that make your eyes comfortable are as natural as the sunlight around 4 p.m. Westin has a total of 373 rooms from deluxe to suite. The view is divided into a city view and a bay view with a port view, and I recommend a city view with a view of Mount Fuji and a train adding sensitivity.

The highlight of the room is by far the bed. Westin’s Heavenly Bed, which is considered to have changed the game of hotel beds, is an ergonomically made bedding using state-of-the-art materials. A fluffy mattress made by Simmons and a goose down blanket that comfortably covers the whole body improve the quality of sleep. As its name implies, guests who have tasted heavenly taste say together, “I want to take it home.”
In fact, Westin believes that the beginning of well-being is a good night’s sleep. ‘Sleep Well Lavender Balm’ is provided to all guests. Applying lavender and chamomile oil relieves tension in the body and helps you sleep well. In addition, there is a “Sleep Well Menu” such as tea and snacks that help sleep through room service, so the hotel’s sincerity toward rest can be seen.
Well, well, well… A place that’s more serious about my health than me

There are three main values of well-being that Westin Yokohama puts forward, including deep sleep. Sleep Well, Eat Well, Move Well. Let’s enjoy the well-being philosophy incorporated throughout the hotel.

First, the restaurant in the hotel will present a variety of healthy food menus. It is also a characteristic of Westin to use locally grown ingredients according to the philosophy of “Eat Well.”
In particular, at Iron Bay, the hotel’s flagship restaurant, you can taste fresh meat, seafood, and grill dishes grilled with farm vegetables grown in Kanagawa Prefecture. Grilled eggplant, mushroom soup, and roasted cauliflower, in particular, break the prejudice that “the well-being diet is not delicious.”

At the Pacific Table, where you can have breakfast and lunch buffets, you can taste foods from all over the world made from local ingredients and even local foods in Yokohama.
An in-room dining breakfast full of the Eat Well menu is also recommended at least one day during the schedule. △Fruit juice △ Yogurt with nuts △ Gluten-free bread △ Avocado sandwiches and other healthy foods open the day at the destination.

Westin even helps customers exercise with the spirit of “Move Well.” One of the things that impressed me the most during my stay was the free running session. Every morning, the “Run Concierge,” an employee in charge of applicants, hosts a jogging program. Customized exercise is possible by adjusting the distance, speed, and course depending on the participants.
In particular, it is literally a “wellness trip” because you can enjoy the morning scenery of Yokohama by running along the Minatomirai coast, where you can see the landmark Ferris wheel and the port landscape.

“Yokohama is a good place to run because you can enjoy both the city and the sea,” said Runkerside, who ran with him on the same day. In fact, the sea breeze blew and I was able to run refreshingly even in the hot sun. You can also rent a massage gun or yoga mat to relax your muscles after running. Westin Yokohama plans to prepare more diverse sports programs such as outdoor yoga sessions in the future.

Fatigue accumulated during the trip can be solved at Heavenly Spa located on the fifth floor. Prior to therapy, you should fill out a full questionnaire with questions. △After thoroughly checking how you feel today △ your physical condition △ your medication △ your skin type, a professional therapist customizes your body’s muscles. After therapy, you can enjoy a jacuzzi in a sauna attached to the powder room or in a swimming pool connected to Heavenly Spa.
In order to live well, it may be more important not to lose than to add. This is because wellness begins with keeping sleep time, maintaining health, and taking care of your mind. If you want to learn how to live a healthy life that will continue even after your trip, why don’t you go to Westin Yokohama.

▶▶▶ Westin Yokohama 100% Enjoy Tip
1) Westin Yokohama is a 25-minute drive from Haneda Airport and an hour and a half from Narita Airport. If you are going to visit Yokohama directly without passing through Tokyo, you will book a flight to Haneda Airport.
2) The code bar located on the 23rd floor sells cocktails named after the Yokohama area postcode. It is recommended because it reflects the characteristics of the area and ingredients.
3) It is convenient for walking because it is close to Yokohama’s main attraction. It takes 10 minutes to get to the Yokohama Landmark Tower, 15 minutes to the night view spot Kishamichi Bridge, and 25 minutes on foot to the red-brick Akarenga warehouse.
