Pacific League Nippon-Ham 10-4 Orix (11th, ES CON FIELD)
Nippon-Ham Fighters manager Tsuyoshi Shinjo showed his confidence in a comeback victory with his usual analogy.
They crushed Orix who had suffered three straight losses in their last match, and have now won consecutive games against Softbank and Orix. They are now just two games behind the leader Softbank, who they lost to. Manager Shinjo said, “It’s getting more interesting. We’re playing with tension in every game. We’ve gone beyond just having fun. We’re going to win under the pressure.”
He then brought up the story of Seko Toshihiko, who closely followed Ikangaa’s back at the 1983 Fukuoka International Marathon and overtook him in the final stretch of the racecourse. “At one point we were four games behind, but Seko dropped his water at the water station, and when I went to pick it up he had a gap, so he drank some water and got close again. I could see him all the way to the racecourse. He had water and wasn’t using Ikangaa (laughs). The real battle began once they were side by side.” Of course, Ikangaa was with Softbank and Seko was with Nippon-Ham. He clearly had a clear image of a comeback victory in the final stretch.
