WHAT NOBODY TELLS YOU ABOUT CLIMBING MT FUJI, Japan Travel Advice

I will try and climb Japan’s tallest and most iconic mountain, Mount Fuji. This is Mount Fuji, an active volcano 3,776 m tall, and the most climbed mountain in Japan. Some people say it’s a spiritual experience. Other people say it’s just cold, crowded, and way harder than they expect. And in this video, we are going to answer the question, how hard is it actually for an average person like me? Secondly, am I prepared enough to climb Mount Fuji? Because boy, you need to be prepared. And thirdly, is it actually worth climbing Mount Fuji [Music] couple of days before you actually go, you can go to the store, you can try everything on and you can get your whatever you rented. Um, so I can prepare now my luggage. There is a backpack inside. These are my shoes, rain gear. So yeah, fleece jacket. If you rent the stuff, you will get a headlamp. Many people climb up at night and see the sunrise from the top of Mount Fuji. Got some gloves. I got a hat and sunscreen. Most people take like snacks and a lot of water with them. Most important thing, 100 yen coins. Why the toilets on Mount Fuji are not free? Let’s do this. Okay. Right. [Music] So, we’re waiting for our bus. If you start your journey to Mount Fuji, you will likely take a bus from Shinjuku. I’m here with Cindy. Hi. She’s from Germany. Is it your first time climbing Mount Fuji? Yes, same. First time. I actually never really hiked before. Uh, I hiked a lot, but I think we’re well prepared. We’re also matching in outfits and exciting. Very leaving Shinjuku now. Oh, this phone is so good. Let’s see if I’m going to survive this. Breakfast time. Cheers. [Music] We just arrived at the fifth station of Fuji. Yay. You know, all the sickness and all of that. It’s recommended to stay here for 1 hour at least. And then from here, we are going to take the Yoshida trail. By the way, there are four different trails. We’re going to take the easiest one because it’s our first time. So, we’re here now. We go there. Yeah. This is Mount Fuji. It’s normal not to see it. Many tourists are actually disappointed because they come all the way to see Mount Fuji and they don’t see it. So FYI, that’s normal. Yeah. Yeah. When you’re climbing Mount Fuji, the prices go up as well. Behind me, Gasah vending machine for 1,000 yen per beer. It seems 500 yen. 500 yen. Water we have here for 250 yen. You can buy air from Mount Fuji for 500 yen. The biggest scam in history. [Music] Yeah. Oh, cute. This is Mount Fuji. You can’t see it really. Don’t expect to be alone when you’re climbing Mount Fuji. It’s so popular. It’s always quite crowded. I just noticed the horses. If you want to climb Mount Fuji, you have to buy your permit first. We bought our permit online beforehand. And you can also buy it here, but I have absolutely no clue if you get it. If you come here with the bus, if you can still get it. We’re at the entrance. We’re climbing now Fuji Park. Filmed on iPhone 6 Pro. This is the entrance of the trail. This is so nice. Uh very green. That’s my first impression. I know that it’s getting harder over time. I know that it’s getting and a lot of people coming back our way. They do not look happy. This is me before climbing Mount Fuji. Fuji. Oh yeah. One sec. Look at this. [Music] See? No, it doesn’t look as doesn’t look as impressive. [Music] Yes, loud speaker. We are here. We arrived at the sixth station. This is also called the safety center. And there are a couple of guys. Um, we still have to go like 3 hoursish to the seventh station. I think we are here where the red sign is. And we go to the seventh station. [Music] There are different parts. We are still fine. We’re actually pretty okay so far, aren’t we? Yeah, we’re good. But they are selling food and drinks here. And you can use the toilet. Look at this blue sky behind me. Wow, it’s so crazy. Sy’s getting a coffee. Coffee on my Fuji. 500 yen. It’s hot. Oh, this view is insane. We need a break. The toilets here are not that bad actually. like only in Japan they still have toilet paper they are somewhat clean um with the money um they ask you to pay usually it’s not that you can’t use them if you don’t pay but they usually ask you to tip [Music] somewhere between the sixth and the seventh station and from the sixth station it was 170 minutes and we walked how much did we walk from there now you’re supposed to walk slow because of altitude sickness you’re supposed to take breaks. Oh, and it’s not that crowded yet. There are some people here [Music] and the view is just so amazing. I mean, it’s also a little bit cloudy. Let’s check. So, I haven’t really checked. Yeah. No vending machines right now at the moment. Um, but the prices are going up. It’s probably because of logistics. Like the ice cream at the last uh hut that we were at was 1,000 yen. Water is 500 yen here. Yeah. Yeah. Or tea is like 600 yen. So [Music] these last bits were a little bit tricky. Yeah. We had to actually climb a little bit. I just hope that it doesn’t continue like that tomorrow because pretty scary. If you fall, you fall. I just bought my iCloud storage on Mount Fuji because we still have like a Wi-Fi uh signal. It doesn’t look that bad in the video actually, but it’s really steep and it’s all like rocks. [Music] Super high as well. One to go. This is so cool. Oh my god. Look at this background. It’s amazing. So amazing. My honest opinion, I would never tell anyone that hiking Mount Fuji is easy. And we came from there and we have to go up there. Can you imagine that? How difficult would you say is it from 1 to 10? One one being easy. I give it a seven. We made it. We are at our heart. And I’m still in the clouds. Like, oh my gosh, this looks so nice. It gets crazier and crazier. I hope it’s not going to continue like that. People are actually climbing these at night. I absolutely have no idea how. So, tomorrow our hike looks like this, for example. [Music] We got a really good dinner. Like usually when you watch other videos, people get like a really simple like curry rice. I don’t know what all of this is. I need to check that later. It’s like a soup with I don’t know. We got tea and rice and a little bit of salad. Do you know what this is? Snacks. This is already for tomorrow already. But that’s not really a bendo. That’s like bread. [Music] Nice view. Nice view. It’s 6:00 p p.m. The view is amazing. We don’t see a lot of the sunset because it’s somewhere behind us. Our plan is to see the sunrise here and then to climb up. My friend decided that might be a better idea. And I’m actually pretty happy about that because the way up is going to be as steep as the last couple of minutes were. And it’s it’s for me as a as somebody who’s hasn’t hiked before at all. This is just a huge challenge. If you stay at a monut, there’s not a shower. You um can brush your teeth outside, but that’s about it. There’s no show. It’s just fy. Everyone’s amazed. [Music] Cindy has already her jacket on because it’s getting colder, right? Yeah. It’s getting freezing right now. There are still people climbing up and also people who continue to climb. Maybe because there are other mountain huts. [Music] This is our sleeping sleeping arrangement. Other private rooms. Good morning. Good morning. It’s now 4:20. We tried to sleep as much as possible. who went to bed really early. I think I slept more than I anticipated to. I mean, most people wake up at night at 1 or 2:00 a.m. and then they climb up to see the sunrise there. Coffee here is 900 yen that I’m going to eat because it’s really big. [Music] So, we’re getting ready and look at that. Look at the landscape. [Music] Kind of. Okay. So, let me show you what it looks like. I I tried to show you before. [Music] We arrived to eight station. This is on 3,100 m, but Fujian is 3,776. So, we still have a bit to climb. No idea how long it’s going to take. It’s not supposed to take that long, but you know, never done it before. We are here somewhere at the eight station where it says eight station. And then there are five more huts and then there’s the summit. How’s it going? Good. Still still good in good spirits. [Music] Still have a couple of huts to go. But look at the trail. It got a bit easier the rest of the way. We don’t have to climb anymore those rocks. We just have to be careful not to slip because of the gravel. There she is. She’s a little faster now because she’s used to hiking. We’re still at the eighth station and it’s like 140 minutes to go. According to the sign, we are a little bit slower. I can feel my legs a lot today. Again, this is my very first hike and I chose Mount Fuy. It is like maybe not the best decision. It’s one of many huts that you will see on your way up. If you ladies and gentlemen, next up goes right here. 3 320 50. Oh, what? 3,250. Not going to climb up these stairs here. 40. Nice. Check. Water. Still 600 yen. Doesn’t get any cheap on another drink. So cute. Here are a lot of huts at the end. We are getting closer. The way back is a different trail, but here where we are right now, people go up and down to this point where we split up then later. Hey Tina video. [Music] There it is. [Music] We think that we can see the summit. The signs are very very distracting. It’s like 80 minutes and there’s like 95 minutes. Okay, let’s go. Let’s go. Let’s do the last couple of Are we excited? Very very excited. My legs are not, but I am. In fact, we are at the ninth station. We passed the famous toi gate that you can see when you’re climbing up to the summit. The last bits and yeah, getting very close now. [Music] We made it. What people don’t tell you about climbing Mount Fuji, if you’re a beginner, it’s not easy. My legs hurt. A lot of people. Okay, it took us way longer than we expected. How cute. Unigiri break. Also, the rim is still closed. We tried to go there. We tried to walk at least like 10 minutes into that uh direction to see a little bit what’s going on because if you didn’t know, like Fujisan is a volcano, active volcano. So, you can see, you know, As the room is closed, there’s actually not too much to do. You have here these souvenir shops. The few is a little bit like, you know, clouds. They have souvenirs. They have postcards. You can send a postcard from Fujisand. They have a restaurant. You can buy food. You can buy drinks here. You can rest. Here’s a resting area, which is incredibly necessary at this point. You can also get one of these flags if you’re climbing up. And at some of the huts, you can get a stamp engraved or something like that on them. So, how hard is this? It’s harder than you think. I wouldn’t tell anyone that it’s easy. Even if you’re watching some videos about it, nobody really shows you that it’s incredibly steep. It took way longer than we thought it would. like they tell you like six, seven hours. Um, we also noticed that it gets windier the higher we climb and that might be difficult because you’re climbing these small the small trail up and there are rocks and you really have to climb and if then comes a little wind and with a lot of like dust also altitude sickness I just learned that you can actually die from it if you notice any of the signs of it. That’s the reason why people tell you to uh return insects. You don’t have mosquitoes, but you have a lot of wasps here that are constantly like frying around you. Give But we made it. We actually made it. I will give you a little update once we are back down and hopefully made it to our bus and maybe Yeah. [Music] We’re back at station at the eighth station somewhere there. It’s way faster to climb down. We just met this group of 30 50 people or something like that and every one of them is like hello. Hi. [Music] Oh, wow. It’s very sandy and windy. We made it back to the point where the trail separates and where we are officially on our way back. We just uh passed the seventh station. The trail looks the same basically all the time. We just started to see some greenery, which is a good sign that we’re getting back. [Music] We are nearly back. And look, I’m still smiling. You’re still smiling? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Time to go. Okay, we can go. Are they actually closing the door now? Yeah. [Music] We made it. We made it. They’re selling fujison shaped cakes here. That’s our reward. We made it. It’s It’s a Fuji melon pun. Yeah, it’s a typical bread that you can find at every convenience store, but also freshly made at some shops and whatever. They usually look like melon. That’s why they called melon pan bread. There’s this nice sugary crust outside. It’s so good. Cindy got also a bunch of stuff. She got a Fuji sun cake, a nikoman. I also got a nikoman. Stop. This is our bus, guys. [Music]

Climbing Mt. Fuji, Japan’s tallest mountain, is something many travelers see as a “must do” when coming to Japan. In this video, I’m going to take you with me to the summit of Mt. Fuji in summer 2025. I’ll also share how and what I prepared, because climbing Mt. Fuji requires more preparation than many people might expect.
I have no hiking experience, but as many, I always wanted to climb Mt. Fuji, and it’s been on my list for many years. The right opportunity finally came when a friend of mine visited Japan in 2025 and told me she was planning on doing it. So I had to ask her if I could join.
This video is both a first-timers Mt. Fuji hike guide and our personal adventure. Enjoy!
