Eighth seed Amanda Anisimova and 23rd seed Naomi Osaka have delivered one of the biggest surprises of the US Open 2025, storming into the semifinals against the odds. Osaka’s resurgence has been startling. The four-time Grand Slam champion snapped a years-long winless drought earlier this season in Saint Malo, but inconsistency lingered. Few predicted she would rediscover her Grand Slam magic here, yet she has done exactly that. Osaka powered past reigning Roland Garros champion Coco Gauff and 11th seed Karolina Muchova, while earlier ousting Daria Kasatkina in a gritty three-setter. Victories over Greet Minnen and Hailey Baptiste steadied her path into the second week.
For Anisimova, few expected a turnaround this sharp. Just weeks ago, she suffered the humiliation of a double-bagel defeat to Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon, a result that raised doubts about her ability to contend at the highest level. Yet in New York, she silenced critics with a stunning straight-sets upset of the second seed in the quarterfinals. Her run has also included wins over Kimberly Birrell, Maya Joint, Jaqueline Cristian, and 18th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, showcasing her renewed confidence.
The numbers underscore their form. Anisimova has played 46 matches this year with 145 aces, a 44.8 percent break conversion rate, and 65 percent of first-serve points won. Osaka, in 35 matches, has hit 226 aces, converting 44.7 percent of break points while winning an impressive 73.5 percent on first serve. Two unlikely semifinalists, both rediscovering their best tennis, now stand just one win away from the final.
