Indian travelers are showing growing interest in Japan, voted the “world’s most favorite country” last year by readers of Condé Nast Traveler, with a surge in searches, according to online travel platform Agoda.

Agoda said it saw a significant 68% increase in Indians’ travel-related searches for Japan between May 15 and Aug. 15, 2025 compared to the same period last year.

Tokyo remains the top destination for Indian tourists, with interest in Japan’s capital rising 59%.

However, Osaka has seen a remarkable surge, recording a 158% increase in searches.

Kyoto, famed for its temples and traditions, also continues to attract visitors, with interest climbing 53%, according to the report.

Gaurav Malik, Country Director for the Indian Subcontinent and Indian Ocean Islands at Agoda, said: “Japan’s mix of modern cities, cultural heritage, and natural beauty is striking a chord with Indian travelers like never before. We are seeing tourists not only choose traditional hotspots like Tokyo but also venture further, with Osaka and other cities quickly gaining popularity.”

In the first five months of 2025, 142,400 Indian tourists visited Japan, an increase of 39.6% compared to the same period in 2024, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization.

For the first seven months of 2025, Japan received a record 24.9 million, an 18.4% increase year-on-year.

If this momentum continues, Japan’s annual inbound visitors in 2025 are expected to surpass 40 million.
