Whether it’s winter or summer, Saskatchewanians like to flock to the mountains for a getaway and a change of scenery. While Saskatchewan is very beautiful, it’s nice to go to the mountains for hiking, snowmobiling, or skiing for something different to do.
Not everyone can hike up a mountain, but a 102-year-old Japanese man is challenging that theory by entering the Guinness World Records Book for climbing Japan’s tallest mountain. Kokichi Akuzawa, his 70-year-old daughter, his granddaughter and her husband, and four other friends all scaled Mount Fuji. At 102, he says it was very tough but his friends and his family encouraged him to keep going.
This isn’t the first time Akuzawa has climbed the mountain either, having completed six years ago at the age of 96. Few things slow this centenarian down as he trained for several months, often starting his walks at 5 each morning, before tackling one of the highest mountains in the world. He told various media outlets that he climbs because he likes it and it’s easy to make friends on the mountain.
Mount Fuji measures in at 3,776 meters, which is just over 12 thousand feet.
