Japan’s top tariff negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, stated on Saturday that the broad trade agreement with the United States is “not settled.”
This is because Washington has not yet issued the expected presidential orders concerning tariffs for pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. While presidential orders have been issued for adjustments to general tariffs, as well as tariffs on automobiles and auto parts, those pertaining to most-favoured-nation status for pharmaceuticals and semiconductors remain outstanding.
Consequently, the agreement cannot be considered finalized, and Tokyo will continue to advocate for the remaining orders. Japan intends to commence a comprehensive analysis of the economic impact of the U.S. auto tariff changes and assess Japan’s competitive trade conditions relative to other nations.
