Walking Through Narai-juku: A Historic Nakasendō Post Town in Nagano
In search of a summer retreat not too far from the Tokyo metropolitan area, I set out for Nagano Prefecture. My route took me north through Shizuoka and Yamanashi before finally reaching Nagano.
From Shizuoka, I continued further north and arrived in Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture. Here, I visited Narai-juku, a post town along the old Nakasendō route that I had long wanted to see.
During the day, the streets are filled with tourists, but at night the town becomes quiet and still. It was so silent that the sound of the ratchet from my bicycle and the water flowing through the roadside gutters echoed through the streets, creating a truly serene atmosphere.
