Food trip in Nagoya, Japan! A guide to Japan’s fascinating local foods

Enjoy 7 local gourmet foods! A day spent in Nagoya, Japan. This time, I’ll be sharing my Nagoya food adventures. Nagoya is full of local delicacies, so it’s always exciting! Please enjoy until the end! Good morning. I’m planning to spend the day eating my way around Nagoya again this morning! First, I walked about 15 minutes from Sakae, where I’m staying. Yes, there it is. This is the first stop of the day. I arrived at Bonbon, a long-established coffee shop founded in 1949. The signboard shows its age. I was looking forward to it. The interior is also cozy and relaxing. When I opened the cute menu, I saw many cakes. The back had an incredible number of descriptions. Nagoya is known for its breakfast menu, but I thought I’d have cake today. I chose the No. 1 chestnut cake (300 yen). My drink was a blended coffee (360 yen). It looked delicious! A luxurious visual for a morning. This would be relaxing before work. The cream-filled chestnut cake also looked delicious. It also came with a white castella cake. It’s rare. I add milk. Ah, so delicious… coffee is the best in the morning. This cup makes me feel refreshed and ready for work. I also have a chestnut. Yes, it’s delicious♪ The firm sponge cake goes well with the soft whipped cream. I think it goes well with coffee. This is the perfect time to have a set like this in the morning. I also enjoyed the chestnut on top. The atmosphere inside the shop is nice, and I’d love to frequent a place like this. Reading a book here on my days off would be my ideal life… I thought to myself as I munched on the cake. I also have a castella cake. Yes, this one is also very sweet and delicious. It’s been a while since I’ve had castella cake. The customer base here is surprisingly diverse. It feels like a place loved by locals. I didn’t get the standard morning set this time, though. I spent a relaxing Nagoya morning at this long-established coffee shop. Well, I don’t really want to move around, but I have to get out soon. Thank you. Thanks to you, this morning has been great♪ I’ve been feeling relaxed, but the cold wind has refreshed me. My brain is probably working hard and energized after the sweets and coffee. I’m going to be working hard and eating my way around the place again today! Anyway, I’ve finished work and it’s lunchtime♪ I’m going to visit another restaurant. I passed by Wellbee, a Sauna. I’m planning to visit some classic restaurants in Nagoya. They have a branch in Tokyo, and I’ve been there before. I thought I’d try it in my hometown of Nagoya, too. I decided to try it for lunch today. While we were talking, I saw this place. First, I’ll try Nagoya’s famous miso katsu at that restaurant♪ I arrived at Yabaton Yabacho Main Branch. A huge sign covering the entire wall and the mascot “Boo-chan” welcome me. I was shown to a counter seat, and the kitchen is right in front of me. Now, let’s take a look at the menu. Of course, I’m looking forward to the miso katsu, but there are many different types. Come to think of it, I’ve only ever had miso katsudon until now. There are quite a few different set meals, too. Nagoya seems to have a lot of different condiments to change the flavor. While I was browsing the a la carte dishes, I came across a menu item that caught my eye. This Yabatan Sanmai looked good (2,200 yen). They also had a teppan tonkatsu, which felt like a good deal. First, the rest of the dishes arrived. It even came with dessert, which was luxurious. This was a comparison of loin and fillet. Looks delicious!♪ As I was looking around, the teppan tonkatsu arrived. It’s nice, the fragrant aroma is amazing… I can’t describe the taste or smell, but at least I can hear the sound lol. Personally, I’d like to use it as background music while editing videos. Seeing everything together is so luxurious. I immediately ate it with rice and miso soup♪ The miso soup was delicious… First, the fillet. The batter was quite fine, wasn’t it? There were several types of sauce to choose from, but this time I chose miso and rock salt. The word “Yabaton” was written on the bowl. Delicious! So soft. This sweet miso goes really well with it. The addictive flavor made me want to eat more rice. I’d also enjoy it with rock salt. The meat’s flavor really stands out, making it delicious. The batter is also crispy. My personal favorite is the loin. I dipped it in miso. It’s fatty and sweet. It’s the perfect accompaniment to rice. It’s also delicious with salt. You can change up the flavor by adding mustard. I love potato salad, so this was a welcome addition. The cabbage was also delicious and refreshing. And then there was the teppan tonkatsu. This one was also chock-full of miso. It was also soft and delicious. The miso flavor felt even richer. The cabbage was also infused with miso. The origins of Yabaton’s miso cutlet date back to the early 1940s, after the war, when the founder dipped kushikatsu in dote nabe sauce. In that sense, dipping it in miso was probably a style closer to the original. The smooth miso is said to recreate the feel of dote nabe. Finally, we had apple pie for dessert. I should have come earlier, instead of telling them I’d been there in Tokyo. I thoroughly enjoyed this iconic Nagoya restaurant. It’s been a while since I last ate here, and it was delicious. I think I’ll go back when I’m in Tokyo. Anyway, I’m heading to the next restaurant, but before that, I’ll get some takeout. I stopped by Matsuzakaya here. The restaurant I was looking for is in the underground food court. I went to Kakuozan Yoshiimo Matsuzakaya Nagoya Branch. Their specialty is sweet potato chips. I heard they have delicious Yoshiimo Hanabi (690 yen). They also have a salty version, but it seems they’re sold out today. I’ll buy some Yoshiimo Hanabi and try it back at my lodging. Anyway, I’ll just go to one more place. I’ll go to a famous Nagoya coffee shop. Of course, I’ve been here many times locally, but I’ve rarely been to it in Nagoya. After Yabatan, I decided to try it. I went to Komeda’s Coffee Nishiki/Isemachi-dori Branch. I’ll kill time here until my next appointment. Unfortunately, breakfast is over, so I’ll have dessert today. I’ll go for the classic Shiro Noir. I chose the Komeda Blend as my set drink. There’s also a variety of food options. I wonder if the ankake spaghetti is only available in Nagoya? Here it is♪. It’s been a while since I’ve had Shiro Noir. It’s surprisingly filling, unlike the mini size. I pour the syrup that comes with it over it. I enjoy it with my second cup of coffee of the day. Ah, so delicious…so comforting. Next, I’ll have the Shiro Noir. Move the cherry. Yes, it’s delicious♪ The warm Danish pastry and cold fresh cream go perfectly together. The sweetness spreads in your mouth, making you happy. There’s plenty of fresh cream, so you’ll want to eat it all or you’ll end up with nothing. By the way, the name is apparently derived from the Japanese word for “white” (shiro) and the French word for “black” (noir). “Black” Danish pastry and “white” fresh cream. Apparently, the name comes from the combination of opposing elements, “hot” and “cold,” coming together. Sweet Shiro Noire goes well with bitter coffee♪ I alternate between eating them until I’ve finished them. Finally, I have the bean snacks that come with the drink. These sweet and salty beans are delicious♪ You can also get them to go. I munched on them with my coffee. The restaurant is quite busy, but the seats are tucked away with partitions between the seats, so I was able to relax. Thank you for the meal! I’ll definitely visit again in Tokyo. Anyway, I’ve finished some work and it’s already evening. I want to work at the inn before dinner, but I’ll stop by one more place before heading home. I went to this restaurant with a sign that says “Taiwan Ramen. “The name of the restaurant is “Sen.” The owner apparently trained at the famous Nagoya restaurant “Ajisen.” The main dish is, of course, Taiwan Ramen. I wonder if it tastes the same as “Ajisen”? The spiciness level is also the same as Ajisen’s. Today I’ll go with the restaurant’s original “Taiwan Tonkotsu.” It’s been a while since I had Taiwan Ramen. The small bowl is packed with ingredients. It looks as delicious as ever. Wow, it’s still as spicy as ever. The soup is pork bone, so maybe the color is a little different? It’s delicious, with the rich tonkotsu flavor. The noodles that soak up the soup are also delicious. The spicy aroma that fills your nose is also nice. It’s a stimulating yet addictive taste. This restaurant is open until 5 or 7 in the morning, so it’s a great place to end the night. It was a long time since I’d last had this spicy Taiwanese ramen. It had been a while, but the tonkotsu flavor gave it a different flavor. I’m not a big fan of spicy food, but I think I’ll try the Taiwanese ramen at Ajisen again. After that, I went back to my lodging and worked until the evening. It’s getting quite late, but I’m going to go for dinner. It’s starting to rain, so I’ll have a light meal and go to bed. Oh, there it is. I’ve arrived at “Daiginko Sakae Branch,” which has a large, eye-catching sign. They serve yakitori made with Aichi Prefecture’s “Kinso-dori” brand chicken. First, a drink after work. I decided to have a beer. This is what I enjoy in the evening. I’ll start with a drink. Ah, happiness…delicious. I feel like the fatigue of the day is being washed away. After taking a breather, I ordered some food. While I was waiting, I was served the appetizers. “This is beautiful.” The “Marbled Chicken Fillet” arrived (660 yen). I dipped it in ginger and sauce. It looked delicious. It was squishy and tender. Oh, this is delicious. I was so glad I ordered this. It was as moist as it looked, and packed with meaty flavor. It was completely different from the chicken fillet I sometimes eat at home. I’m looking forward to the yakitori. I ordered a few recommended skewers. First, the “Shinzo” (187 yen), which was also delicious. It was juicy and chewy. I was so happy to get a hit right from the start. Next came the meatballs (187 yen). They looked great with a beer in the background. They were cooked perfectly, and had a nice aroma. This definitely goes well with beer. Then I had my favorite, “Tonjiri” (209 yen). It had a unique texture, and the fat was sweet and delicious. Okay, let’s order more! The chicken skin was crispy (187 yen). It made a lovely sound! It was light, and I could eat as many as I wanted. Of course, it paired well with beer. It was a truly blissful moment after work. Other dishes I enjoyed included “Chicken Neck Meat” (209 yen), “Chicken Wings ” (209 yen), ” Negima” (242 yen), and “Quail” (209 yen). The yakitori was served on a wooden board in the back. The last skewers were “Nagoya Cochin Thigh” (528 yen) and “Avocado Meat Wrap” (242 yen). It was my first time trying these, but the creamy avocado was a great match. After a delicious Nagoya Cochin, I was starting to feel full. There were still more delicious-looking skewers, and I was disappointed that some were sold out. It was time to wrap things up. So, to finish off, I ordered “Chicken Soup” (352 yen). Finally, I ordered “Deep-fried Chicken Thigh” (660 yen), which I had my eye on. It came with lemon and salt. It was quite filling for the last meal. I’m glad I ordered it after all. It’s delicious. It was incredibly juicy and full of juice. Let’s have some chicken soup together. which was also delicious. I thought it would have a milder flavor, but it was surprisingly strong and flavorful. It also had meatballs, so it was quite filling. I was also able to try the Aichi Prefecture chicken, so I was glad I went in. I leisurely savored the soup and left the restaurant. There were exactly 10 skewers. Thank you for the meal! Well, there’s only one more place left for today! The last place I went to was “Ramen-ya.” Of course, as the name suggests, they also serve ramen. But there was one menu item I was interested in today. It was this “Katsu Curry Rice” (1,000 yen). Apparently, it’s a popular final dish among locals. Wow, this is amazing… Curry rice with egg on top, and a pork cutlet on the side. It looks similar to the Jiyuken curry I had in Osaka. Ah, delicious. The flavor is quite mild and gentle. It’s easy to eat, like risotto. The crispy cutlet goes well with curry, of course. Then I crumbled the egg in the middle. It was definitely delicious… The sauce on top mixed in and added richness. It was definitely a flavor that made me crave it. It was addictive. I finished the final dish in no time. Ah, it was delicious… Okay, I’m full now, so I’ll get some sleep at the inn. That’s all for today. Thank you for watching until the end! Please also see the next video!
