If you come to Japan, you better brace yourself for Japanese compliments. Now, it’s true. If you pull out an N5 level Kichiwa, you’ll get Nihongo Joun. But this compliment actually wrecked me. A few days into starting my life in Japan, a small child came up and told me. This sent me into a doom spiral. I started looking up rhinoplastic surgeons in Korea and checking how long I can wear a mask to work before it starts getting weird. I told them that and they didn’t believe me. So, I asked them, “Well, what if in the USA having a flat nose was a good thing?” And I said to you, “You have a beautiful flat nose. Would that be okay?” They were stunned. No, that would be horrible. So, I think wherever you are in the world, the safest compliments you can give people are something they have some control over, like great hair or nihongo jou.
