WATCH OUT for Compliments in Japan!
If you come to Japan, you better brace yourself for Japanese compliments. Now, it’s true. If you pull out an N5 level Kichiwa, you’ll get Nihongo Joun. But this compliment actually wrecked me. A few days into starting my life in Japan, a small child came up and told me. This sent me into a doom spiral. I started looking up rhinoplastic surgeons in Korea and checking how long I can wear a mask to work before it starts getting weird. But I eventually shrugged it off with kids have no filters and some therapy and moved on. Just in time for an adult to say it to me, too. They told me, “Oh, it’s a compliment. Japanese people think long noses are cool and don’t want flat noses.” Suspicious. In the USA, it’s best to not talk about the size of people’s appendages in general. I told them that and they didn’t believe me. So, I asked them, “Well, what if in the USA having a flat nose was a good thing?” And I said to you, “You have a beautiful flat nose. Would that be okay?” They were stunned. No, that would be horrible. So, I think wherever you are in the world, the safest compliments you can give people are something they have some control over, like great hair or nihongo jou.
Some compliments in Japan may wreck your day.

I usually just play it safe, say the weather is nice today then compliment their huge knockers
Lived in japan, only got one nihongo jouzu lol
Come on. You are living in Japan you have to integrate with their culture. If they told you it's a compliment in their culture you accept it and say "Thank you", they didn't mean to offend you. They should not adjust to you. Typical American always offended by everything.
That is some WOW compliments there
Immediately goes back a video or two to see your schnoz 🤣
Humbling a Japanese person is crazy work 😅😂
Commodore Matthew Perry was often depicted by the Japanese as having an unflatteringly large nose. Of course using military might to force a country into opening its borders may have also had something to do with that. But I wouldn’t necessarily take 鼻が高いですね as an insult. They may actually be paying you a compliment.
"You're cool" would be the safest compliment for you 😂
I would love to see more like this video, they are great
My favorite is "your face is small", also a compliment.
You know what they say about large noses!

Idk either tbh but the movie with the guy having a giant nose was pretty good.
