Developer Genki has confirmed on social media that the highly anticipated new entry in the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series will exit Early Access and become a full launch title on September 25.
Simply titled Tokyo Xtreme Racer, it’ll be the first entry in the Tokyo Expressway-based, head-to-head street racing series in two decades when it arrives but — despite its history with consoles, particularly the PlayStation platform — it’ll also only be available via Steam for now.
At present no console version of the title has been explicitly confirmed, though it has been hinted. Nonetheless it’s something we’d anticipate in due course, or at least once Genki has navigated the initial launch phase and subsequent updates after what’s been a longer than expected Early Access period.
While the launch “1.0” version of TXR is coming about four months later than originally expected, it won’t be entirely feature-complete as intended. In its announcement, Genki noted that two features — online multiplayer leaderboards, and a replay function — have been cut from the launch.
The replay feature has simply been postponed, with Genki noting that it’ll add the mode in a future update at an unspecified time. Meanwhile the leaderboard issue is down to what Genki terms “insufficient cheat prevention measures”, which would mean unscrupulous players could unfairly achieve high rankings. There’s no indication of when this will be rectified, if indeed at all.
Otherwise the title looks to be ready to roll in just under two weeks, and Genki has been teasing new car additions recently too. The full list for launch looks to be just under 60 cars from a range of Japanese brands: Daihatsu, Honda, Lexus, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota will all be represented. More tuning parts and more game chapters will also be added.
For the full release version there’ll be a $20 uplift over the Early Access title, coming in at $49.99 — though players who’ve already bought into the EA window will upgrade at no additional cost, so it may be worth dropping the $29.99 right now.
Prices for Europe (and the UK) have yet to be confirmed, but we’d expect a similar rise. That should mean around €49.99 (and £44.99) when it arrives on Thursday September 25. Japanese pricing reflects that too, with the launch version coming in at ¥6600, or about $18 more than the ¥3960 Early Access cost.
