SAGINAW, MI — A Japanese tradition in Saginaw is scheduled to add some culture to the riverside later this month.
Japanese Cultural Center staff will host the 2025 Japan Festival from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at the cultural center, 527 Ezra Rust Drive.
The Japan Festival will include taiko drumming, harp playing, singing, and martial arts.
Attendees can enjoy origami, Japanese calligraphy, vendors and raffles there, organizers said.
The event will include Japanese sweets as well as the traditional Japanese tea ceremony at the center’s tea house.
Attendance is free and open to the public, although participation in the tea ceremony costs $10.
The cultural center hosts the Japan Festival each fall. Other events throughout the year include tea ceremonies, ikebana classes, bonsai workshops and more. See a complete list of events here.
The city built the teahouse in 1986 in a joint venture with its sister city, Tokushima, Japan. A nonprofit board operates the teahouse, but Saginaw has an agreement with Tokushima to maintain the structure.

The Japanese Cultural Center, Tea House & Gardens of Saginaw is “dedicated to promoting intercultural understanding and peace through a bowl of tea.” It is open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday from April 1 through Oct. 31.
