Naomi Osaka’s impressive run at the 2025 US Open has come to an end after bowing out in the semifinals to home favourite Amanda Anisimova.

The Japanese star was closing in on her first Grand Slam final in over four years after clinching the opening set against the American.

It was not to be, however, as Anisimova fought back and defeated Osaka to enter the championship match at Flushing Meadows for the first time, where she will take on Aryna Sabalenka.

Despite the narrow loss after nearly three hours of play at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the former world number one was seemingly positive when facing the media following the match.

Giving her immediate reaction to the defeat in her post-match press conference, Osaka said: “I don’t feel sad, it’s really weird.

“Well, it’s not weird because I just feel that I did the best that I could,” explained the two-time US Open champion.

“And honestly, it’s kind of inspiring for me because it makes me just want to train and try to get better and hopefully just give it my best shot again and see what happens.

“I think I can’t be mad or upset at myself. I am happy that I lost in the semis instead of the first round or the third round, which is where I usually get to!”

Naomi Osaka achieves her best Grand Slam finish since 2021

After taking a year away from the game in 2023 to give birth to her first child, Osaka struggled to return to her Grand Slam-winning level in 2024 and most of 2025, crashing out in the early stages of each major.

Up until the US Open, her best result was a third-round finish, which she achieved at the Australian Open and Wimbledon earlier this season.

That has all changed in New York, where, after appointing new coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, she has been in incredible form.

Her semifinal appearance marks the best result she has had at a Grand Slam since winning the 2021 Australian Open title.

Though she was not able to reach the final, Osaka is back to her very best on the WTA Tour.
