MISHIMA, Japan (SMU) – SMU women’s golf moved up into seventh place during round two of the Pan Pacific Super League in Japan with play affected by Typhoon Peipah.

“The team got off to a strong start on the front nine this morning,” said head coach Lauren Mason.  “It was really great to see them put together a solid front but here in Japan you stop for lunch which might have slowed our momentum a bit. That mixed with some challenging weather—fog and heavy rain led to difficult conditions, with play suspended a couple of times on the back nine. That being said- really proud of the direction the team is going and looking forward to tomorrow’s round – should we play.

“A typhoon is expected to move in overnight, and the tournament committee will make a decision at 6:30 a.m. regarding the final round. If play cannot continue, the tournament will be reduced to two rounds.”

SMU came into the day with an eighth-place standing after shooting 10-over during day one. They improved with an eight-over day two. SMU jumped into seventh-place. SMU was three-under on the front nine before conditions on the course worsened The team sits five shots back of a spot in the top six.

Mackenzie Lee excelled during day two. She shot a two-under 69 to move from 55th place to 24th. She birdied three times without a bogey on the front nine.  Lee can add to her 26 career top-20 finishes with another good day on Friday.

Emily Odwin shot two-over on the day to move to five-over for the tournament. She played bogey free on the front nine. She holds a share of 49th. Also in 49th, Celine Chen shot three-over in round two. The junior carded three birdies.

Grace Jin sits in a tie for 62nd place. She shot five-over in round two. Yoonjeong Huh carded a 78 to move into a tie for 114th.

Competing as an individual, freshman Uma Bergner vaulted up 20 spots on the leaderboard with a 73. She holds a share of 72nd. Jingan (Annie) Huang carded a 79 and sits in 97th.

If the weather cooperates, the Mustangs head back to the course for the final round at 9:10 a.m. Friday morning in Japan which is 7:10 p.m. on Thursday back in United States Central Time.
