Naomi Osaka is eyeing up a fifth Grand Slam title after making it through to the semifinal of the US Open.

The Japanese player beat Karolina Muchova 6-4, 7-5 to edge through to her first semifinal at Flushing Meadows since lifting the title in 2020.

Osaka has lots of respect for Amanda Anisimova, but it will be purely business when the two stars take to the court on Thursday.

It’s been a tough few years for the 27-year-old, with Osaka sharing that she almost retired from tennis.

Osaka has endured some bumps in the road so far at the US Open, but having won the tournament twice previously, she might now be forgiven for eyeing up the prize.

This match does feel like a good one, with two of the hardest ball strikers on the women’s tour set to come face-to-face.

A former coach of Osaka’s recently claimed the US Open was hard to win, but with two titles under her belt, the player is on course for a hat-trick.

Osaka is not counting any chickens ahead of facing Anisimova, however, and has made a prediction ahead of the eagerly-awaited semifinal.

She said in her press conference: “For me, she’s always been one of the most talented players on tour. I think no one wants to see her name next to theirs, especially with what she would potentially do.

“I think she’s one of the players where you don’t know where she’s going to hit the ball.

“I honestly didn’t watch the Wimbledon final. Obviously, I saw the score line and I saw, how devastated she must be, but I think to play Iga here and to win it on home soil is something that is a really big achievement and, credit to her.

“I think the match is going to be really tough tomorrow.”

Osaka stats during win over Karolina Muchova

Osaka came through with relative ease against the player from the Czech Republic, and it’s great to see her back in a semifinal of a Grand Slam once again.

With experience of winning these big titles under her belt, she might just have an edge over Anisimova in the last four clash.

However, after coming through against Iga Swiatek and silencing the demons from the Wimbledon final, the American will also view this as a big opportunity.

Osaka against Anisimova promises to be a classic and whoever does come through will be more than capable of troubling Sabalenka should she defeat Jessica Pegula in the other semifinal.
