The train journey from Tokyo to Mount Fuji is one of the most popular day trips in Japan. And the country’s highly efficient rail system offers multiple ways to get there, each getting to different needs and budgets. The total distance depends on the chosen route, but most connections cover around 100 to 130 km, making it both quick and convenient to reach the iconic mountain from the capital. One of the fastest and most scenic options is taking the Tokaido Shinkansen from either Tokyo station or Shinakqua station to Shinfuji station. The trip on a kodama service takes about 1 hour and roughly 40 to 45 minutes. Into the journey, passengers are rewarded with stunning views of Mount Fuji from the right hand side of the train. Tickets from this segment cost around 6,000 yen, one way without a Japan rail pass. But Japan rail passh holders can use kodama trains for free. Trains depart frequently every 15 to 30 minutes throughout the day making this option highly flexible. Once you arrive at Shinfuji station the journey continues with a fuguq bus transfer to Mount Fuji station taking about 2 hours and 15 minutes. The bus fair is 2,136 yen one way or 4,273 yen for a return trip. Since the FujiQ line is not part of the JR pass, this bus fair is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass. For those who prefer a direct train connection without transfers, the Fuji Excursion Limited Express is an excellent choice. This train departs from Shinjuku Station in central Tokyo and runs directly to Kawajuko station, which is one of the gateways to Mount Fuji. Along the way, it stops at Tachikua, Hachioi, Ortsuki, Tusuru Boonko University, Fujisan Station, and Fujiku Highland before reaching Kawajiko. The service operates three times daily with weekday departures at 7:30, 8:30, and 9:30 and similar timings on weekend and holidays. Arrival at Kawajiko is appropriately two hours later, making it one of the quickest and most hassle-free ways to get close to Mount Fuji. Whether you choose the speed of Shinkansen with a bus transfer or the simplicity of the Fuji Exclusion Limited Express, both options provide reliable and comfortable travel. The Shinkansen route is faster overall, but the direct Fuji exclusion allows passenger to relax without connections. Ticker prices range from 4,130 yen to about 6,000 yen for rail travel with additional cost for buses.
