SEEEU European Month of Photography 2025 takes place from October 23 to November 23, bringing contemporary European photography into public spaces across the city. The festival, held in Japan for the first time, has announced an initial lineup of participating artists.
Each year, the month-long program highlights Europe’s present moment through the lens of photography. For 2025, the theme is “Reframing Realities: New Contours of the Present.” The exhibition aims to reinterpret perspectives shaping modern Europe, from the impact of armed conflict and the climate crisis to questions of identity, memory, and belonging. Through works that navigate between documentation and imagination, photographers challenge audiences to consider: Where are the contours of reality, and who redraws them?
This year’s lineup features nine artist groups from eight countries. Among them are Swiss duo Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, who will present their final collaborative project “Water Column” in Japan’s public spaces for the first time; Lithuanian artist Tadao Cern, who captures beachgoers to probe the illusion of privacy; Italian artist Claudia Fuggetti, whose work repositions nature as an active presence; and Spanish artist Francisco González Camacho, who addresses gentrification, waste, and environmental decline. Other featured artists include Igor Šiler (Serbia), Varvara Ulryk (Ukraine), and Anna Tihanyi (Hungary).
Jean-Eric Paquet, Ambassador of the European Union to Japan, expressed support for the project, noting that the festival will bring European perspectives into Tokyo’s everyday landscapes, offering quiet moments of reflection. He emphasized the role of photography in sparking cultural dialogue and strengthening ties between Europe and Japan at a time of global uncertainty.
