Tokyo has emerged as the “breakout destination of the year” in a survey of travel trends by Canadian travel agency FlightHub.

The Japanese capital saw bookings leap 56 per cent compared to 2024, while another Asian destination — Manila in the Philippines — again took top spot overall.

Meanwhile, bookings to the gambling mecca of Las Vegas, Nevada have plunged 40 per cent compared to last year.

Releasing its Unveiled report on travel and booking behaviour for 2025, FlightHub said the data reveals “clear shifts” in consumer choices, with vacationers seeking destinations that offer “rich experiences without the high price tag.”

It found Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, was the leading holiday spot for baby boomers, with 32 per cent of bookings, while the Mexican resort area of Cancun was favoured by female travellers, with one in six total bookings.

For solo travellers, the city of Lagos, Nigeria, was No. 1, accounting for 84 per cent of bookings.

Domestically, Toronto (No. 1), Vancouver (2) and Calgary (3) topped the leaderboard of most-booked Canadian destinations, followed by Edmonton, Montreal and Winnipeg.

“This year’s data demonstrates a trend toward domestic tourism following the U.S. election, a shift accentuated by the current economic conditions,” said Ayoub Hissar, of FlightHub. “While Western Canada and Toronto benefit from this trend, Montreal climbed three spots in the ranking from last year.”
