[Japan Hidden Gem] Zao Okama Crater Lake | Japan’s Emerald Volcano Wonder

[Music] [Applause] Zhaoama, also known as the Okama Crater, is a volcanic lake located in the heart of the Zhao mountain range. Straddling Miyagi and Yamagatada Prefectures, its unique circular shape and mysterious, everchanging colors have made it one of the most iconic symbols of the Zho region. Sitting at an altitude of around 1,600 m, the Crater Lake measures about 325 m across, 1,000 m in circumference and 27 m deep. Formed by volcanic activity, the lake resembles a giant cooking pot, hence the name Okama, which means cauldron in Japanese. What makes Okama especially fascinating is its remarkable ability to change color depending on the weather, season, and angle of sunlight. At times, it glows a deep emerald green. On other days, it appears blue, gray, or even multicolored, which has earned it the nickname the fivecolor pond. This stunning transformation is caused by volcanic minerals and the water’s unique qualities, making each visit a completely new experience. From Tokyo, visitors can reach Okama in about 4.5 to 5 hours by car. Traveling via the Tohoku Expressway. While traffic may be heavier on weekends and during holiday seasons, the route allows for enjoyable stops in Fukushima or Miyagi along the way. Travelers using public transportation can take the Shinkansen bullet train to Yamagatada or Shiroishi Zho station, then transfer to buses or taxis to reach the crater. Okama can be easily accessed by car via the Zhao echol line in the Zho Highline. A parking area and viewing platforms are available, allowing anyone to enjoy the breathtaking scenery when the weather is clear. Around the crater, alpine flowers and seasonal blossoms create a colorful backdrop in spring and summer. Vibrant red and gold foliage decorates the mountains in autumn and in winter. The entire landscape transforms into a snow-covered wonderland. Especially famous are the snow monsters Juo, massive trees encased in ice and snow, which along with Okama are signature sites of the Zho region. The Okama Crater, shaped by the power of the earth and the mysteries of nature, is truly a masterpiece of natural art. Visitors are captivated by its overwhelming scale, its vivid beauty, and the constantly shifting colors of the water. Anyone visiting the Zhao mountain range should make Okama a must-sea destination. When driving to Zhaoama, there is normally a toll fee of 600 yen and the road is officially open until 500p M. However, when I visited around 520p M, the road was not yet closed and the toll booth was already shut down. This means that after 500pm m you might be able to enter without paying. That said, please keep in mind that in winter the sun sets early. So this is likely only possible in the summer. Also, the fact that I got in for free may have just been pure luck. Usually the road may be closed after hours. Therefore, I do not recommend relying on this information as it may not work in most cases. [Music]
