Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will visit Kyoto and Osaka in western Japan for three days next month. Their itinerary includes attendance at the opening ceremony of an international conference on science and technology and a visit to the 2025 World Expo.
According to the Imperial Household Agency, the couple will take a Shinkansen bullet train and arrive in Kyoto on October 4.
They will visit Kyoto Botanical Gardens, which commemorated its centenary last year. They will tour an area featuring various tree species collected from Japan and other countries.
The following day, they will attend the opening ceremony of the annual meeting of the Science and Technology in Society forum, or STS forum, in Kyoto City. At the international conference, researchers, business executives, government officials and others will discuss advances in science and technology as well as future challenges.
The couple will also visit Katsura Imperial Villa. The Emperor last went there in 1980, while it will be the Empress’s first time.
On October 6, they will travel to the 2025 World Expo in Osaka. It will be their first time there since attending the opening ceremony in April.
The couple will view a pavilion showing the history and activities of the United Nations, which marks its 80th anniversary this year, as well as one showcasing cutting-edge robotics technology.
They will return to Tokyo that evening.
