Shanghai is one of the four municipalities under the direct administration of the central government of the People’s Republic of China, the largest city in China by population, and the second most populous city proper in the world, with a population of 24.18 million as of 2017. It is a global financial center and transport hub, with the world’s busiest container port. Located in the Yangtze River Delta, it sits on the south edge of the estuary of the Yangtze in the middle portion of the Eastern China coast. The municipality borders the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the south, east and west, and is bound to the east by the East China Sea.

上海，简称沪，别称申，是中華人民共和國直轄市，也是中国经济发达的城市，国际金融、贸易和航运中心，其港口为全球最繁忙的港口；主要产业包括商贸流通、金融、信息、制造等。上海位於中国东部弧形海岸线的正中间，长江三角洲最东部，东临东海，南濒杭州湾，西与江苏、浙江两省相接，北端的崇明岛处于长江入海口中，佔地面積6,340平方公里。上海市是世界最大的城市之一，截至2018年，人口2423.78万，其中本地户籍人口占59.72%，达1447.57万；近年来，上海市也与周围的江苏、浙江两省高速发展的多个城市共同构成长江三角洲城市群，是世界几大城市群之一。2018年生产总值為32679.87億元人民幣，按同年國際匯率折合4,872.94億美元，為世界一大經濟區域；人均生产总值則為135000元人民幣，按同年國際匯率折合20,130.02美元。2018年上海居民全年人均可支配收入為64183元人民幣。《2016年中国城市可持续发展报告：衡量生态投入与人类发展》中，人类发展指数达到0.848，位列中国主要城市第6位。
