A man in his 30s sprayed what is believed to be pepper spray at Tokyo Metro’s Suitengumae Station late at night on August 29.

Officials said a man in his 50s, who was nearby, complained of pain in his throat and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The officials said the spray belonged to an acquaintance of the man in his 30s.

The man apparently received the spray from the acquaintance and sprinkled it toward a pillar on the station platform.

He has told investigators that he tried it out of curiosity.

Tokyo police are looking into what led to the incident.
