Peaceful Walk in Japan’s Hidden Canyon 🌿 340,000 Years of Nature’s Wonder

Today, we’re heading to Sannomiya Canyon, about 48 km west of Miyazaki City!♪ It seems the canyon is somewhere around here… For now, let’s try going down this little path by the sign. Such a narrow road—just enough for one car! 💦 A parking lot! What a relief♡ Sannomiya Canyon is a geosite in the Kirishima Geopark. A geosite is a special place where you can discover Earth’s history and how the land was formed. This canyon was created when welded tuff from the Kakuto Caldera eruption 340,000 years ago was carved by the river. The trail here is about 1 km long. Chosen as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Walking Trails” in 2002, it takes you through 11 mysterious tunnels.♪ Here’s tunnel number one!♪ Right after it, you’ll see this huge rock wall called “Byobu-iwa,” or Folding Screen Rock. 32 meters tall and 60 meters wide—like a breathtaking piece of natural art! Now tunnel number two!♪ Even in midsummer, it’s so cool and refreshing inside.♡ Did you know? Until the 1950s, a trolley once ran along this path carrying wood and charcoal. These tunnels were actually dug through the hard rock by hand, just to let the trolley pass. Thanks to the hard work of those before us, carving through solid rock, we get to enjoy this incredible scenery today. 😊 Here’s tunnel number four!♪ The water looks swollen and a bit muddy, maybe from last week’s rain. Tunnel number five ahead!♪ And tunnel number six!♪ Here’s number seven!♪ And right after, another signboard. This is Kappa Cave, a mystical space shaped by water and rock. It feels like a gateway to another world.♡ Let’s keep going through tunnel number eight. A huge rock wall towers over the path… Mesmerized, I couldn’t help but stop. After a few minutes, We began to hear the sound of rushing water. Out of tunnel number nine… …another signboard! Let’s go down to the riverbank. This big flat rock is called Senjō-iwa. Over ages, volcanic rock was carved by water into patterns that look just like tatami mats. The sound of this waterfall was chosen as one of “Japan’s 100 Soundscapes.” Up close, it’s really powerful! Maybe from the heavy rain last week, a tree had fallen. It feels like an adventure—so exciting!♪ Tunnel number ten. There’s a bridge high above the canyon. We’ll head up there later!♪ And finally, tunnel number eleven!♪ The walking trail ends here. Now let’s climb up to that bridge we saw earlier!♪ Here’s the view from the top of the stairs—pretty steep! 💦 This is Hashimitsu Bridge, built in 1943 by locals to cross the Hamanose River. Because it was wartime and steel was scarce, they reinforced it with bamboo instead. You’d never guess! Nature’s masterpiece, shaped by rock and water over 340,000 years. We hope you enjoyed the journey with us♪
