TOKYO (Kyodo) — Tokyo stocks opened higher Tuesday as investors hunted for bargains after the Nikkei index ended at a three-week low the previous day.


In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 112.14 points, or 0.27 percent, from Monday to 42,300.93. The broader Topix index was up 7.02 points, or 0.23 percent, at 3,070.21.


On the top-tier Prime Market, the main gainers were glass and ceramic products, oil and coal product, and mining issues.


At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 147.09-10 yen compared with 147.29-30 yen at 4 p.m. in London and 147.06-08 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Monday.


The euro was quoted at $1.1714-1716 and 172.30-34 yen against $1.1724-1726 and 172.42-46 yen in Tokyo late Monday afternoon.


U.S. markets were closed Monday for a national holiday.
