The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.0 quake in Japan near Hakodate, Hakodate Shi, Hokkaido, only 19 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Monday, February 10th, 2025, at 11:16 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 96. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. A third agency, Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hakodate (pop. 275,700) located 47 km from the epicenter, Mutsu (pop. 49,200) 47 km away, Honchō (pop. 30,000) 54 km away, Kamiiso (pop. 38,100) 56 km away, Hokuto (pop. 46,100) 56 km away, and Muroran (pop. 96,200) 72 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Date (pop. 35,300) located 91 km from the epicenter, and Shiraoi (pop. 20,800) 93 km away.
