Dreaming of Winter – Wadano, Hakuba

[Music] [Music] Number n. Heat. Heat. Heat. [Music]

One of the sleekest modern Japanese chalets in Hakuba with bunk beds.

Take your ski holiday up a notch with a stay at this sleek, stunning designer chalet nestled in the prestigious region of Upper Wadano.

With the lifts just 200 metres away, you can hit the slopes in no time at all – and then retreat back to your chalet to enjoy a night curled up in the sunken lounge, watching the snow fall behind the window. This is the life!

One of a growing number of modern Japanese, Niseko-esque ski chalets now taking up residence in the trendy Wadano precinct of Hakuba. It was designed by Sapporo architect Makoto Nakayama, who has brought to life some of Niseko’s most prestigious holiday residences. His style is known for clean lines and simple forms inspired by traditional Japanese architecture.

Another of Nakayama-san’s signatures is making a feature of external views. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views out over an internal garden courtyard, which fills with falling snow creating ever-changing natural art. On another side of the lounge, another beautiful picture window looks over a stone garden out to the forest, at eye-level when seated. Very zen!

An open-plan dining room and lounge occupy the main living space on the ground floor. A staggered steel staircase rises from between these spaces to a second-floor retreat, with bunk-bed room (sleeping 4) and traditional Japanese tatami (straw mat) floor room (sleeping 2).

On the other side of the internal courtyard is the master bedroom and first guest bedroom (king + twin, each with en suite). Corridors to the rooms along either side of the courtyard frame the space and make for a traditional Japanese “ryokan” inn feel.
