Meeting the Bowing Deer of Nara Park | Japan Travel Vlog 🦌
When most people think of Nara, they picture bowing deer and ancient temples. But I’m here to show you that there’s even more to discover. From peaceful streets and friendly encounters to a mouthwatering meal waiting at the end. Join me as we explore Na the way it’s meant to be experienced, one adventure and one bite at a time. For the first trick in today’s talent show, let’s start the adventure off strong by heading to Nara Park. Yo. Okay, so we’re here. Uh we are here in the Nara Park, which is actually where uh the deers are located. Um he did say that some of them have their uh the males obviously have the horns or not the horns, but the antlers. And if they are antlers are shortened or have looked like they have been cut short, that means that they have been aggressive in the past. That doesn’t mean that they are now, but they do it because some people will try and feed them and then they’ll tease the deer and the deer will buff them. So, they take off their antlers, but we’re looking for food right now cuz you can buy little little things of food to give to them. And then he said the females will uh will bite your hand if you try and tease them. So, this is so cool. There’s a deer on the sidewalk. So, everybody your intro. Oh, you’re doing Yeah, we’re currently rolling. I mean, I’m very excited. These guys look so cute, man. It obviously kind of smells like like animal. And again, these deer do bow. So, super cool. I’m very excited to see. You guys will obviously be able to see it. The other cameraman getting shots of this guy right here. Look at that. Oh, he makes little noises. Look at this guy. [Music] Is that him making that noise? That’s him making that noise, too. What the actual What the heck? That’s him making that noise. Hilarious. You guys can see all this back here is filled with deer and people and feeding and man, so cool. I don’t know where we get the food, but we’re going to start looking for some food. And we will show you guys just a couple of or a couple clips of us feeding the deer. And if you guys come down here, definitely please do be respectful. Of course, there’s no smoking out here. If you do feed the deer, please feed them immediately after they bow. You don’t need to Yeah, you don’t need to be afraid of them. But please, if you have food um and they bow, the rule or the etiquette is as soon Yeah, that is as soon as they bow, you need to feed them. Don’t try and play hard ball and be like, no, they will bite you. They will bite you and they will bite you. And there will be consequences on both parties, both male and or not male, both man and deer. So, just be respectful, guys. This place is super awesome. People are taking pictures. Like, I’ll show you guys all this. People are taking pictures. People are walking around. People are enjoying the life, the vegetation. They’ve got school buses out here full of kids. It was about an hour. Um, honestly, it was about an hour, maybe an hour and a half. It felt like a very long time whenever we got on that bus from the last clip you got or guys saw which was uh them eating beef shaboo shaboo and then we got on the bus and then we drove over here. So, and definitely I’m trying to watch my step because there is uh there is deer scat on the floor. So, definitely if you wear like white sneakers or anything that you kind of care about, be mindful. You don’t want to be stepping in scat. Look at this guy. Look at him. He minding his business. He doing about his life. He enjoying it. Look at all these guys, man. Hold on. Hold on, chat. We are stumbling upon them. So many of them. They’re all sitting underneath the shade because even though to us it’s not hot. Want to sit down, maybe relax, kind of hang out. Are beautiful. Of course, they are domestic. You’re okay. Don’t worry. Don’t worry. Don’t worry. Yeah, of course. Little little scats on the ground. Oh, man. They are adorable, man. I like this one. This one underneath the the tree. You can see him right here. He’s just chilling out. He just like me for real. Oh, what’s the matter with you? He’s just standing here menacingly. N he cute though. You can see their their their coats aren’t like um they don’t look like they’re washed like 24/7. They probably just let them do their own thing. And then of course if they uh they bow like that one just bowed. I wish I got that on camera, but that one just bowed. I know Zion and mom are over here. I need the camera to keep staying on me, brother. You and me, we’re walking solo, one v one. And the walkways are so nice. It’s so beautiful out here in the middle of April, guys. Today, I don’t know if I told you guys, but I believe today is April. Hold on, let me get it out. I don’t know if you guys can see that. April 22nd. But yeah, guys. Wow. This is really awesome. And I mean, even if people aren’t um socializing with the deer or trying to get anything from the deers um like pictures or whatever, they’re still walking around enjoying it, having a grand time. I see people studying. I see people walking around enjoying their day. That person is sitting right next to the deer. I mean, unbothered. Zion, my co-host is here. Hello. Welcome back. I don’t know if your microphone is on. Hold on. Okay, now you’re on. Yeah. So, how was the little walk away with mom? It’s been cool. I wonder where did she go? Mom is going to find the uh food right now. So, and then she’s going to bring back a little bit. Mhm. Um I’ve been talking to him about like etiquette and like be respectful out here. Like don’t be a jerk. Don’t be a jerk because I don’t want any of these deers or dough, whatever is the actual like word to it. Whatever. I don’t want any of them losing their horns because some of y’all want to play hookie with some of the food. Don’t be that way. That’s rude. This is their homeland. You know, you got to be respectful to them just like they got to be respectful to you. So, man, this is awesome. Yeah, it’s pretty crazy stuff. It’s like in the 70s, maybe 71 or 72 out right now. There’s like a lot of them, too. Yeah. I thought there would be like almost like a little ground of them. No, they’re like or our our tour guide did say and it was funny cuz obviously he was joking, but he did say about like 300 years ago or something like that, the deer, the dough got here because they flew over here 800 km 600 600 km an hour, which obviously that’s a joke. Uh, deer though can’t fly. Um, but it was still funny because he was like, “That’s how people believe that they got here.” Obviously, I’m sure that they were just born here and they just found them out here in uh, Nar, Japan. So, again, keep everything in mind that I’ve said, guys. Um, if you do want to come out here with the tour guide or anything like that, um, they will do like a full day experience. Um, we do have to get back on the bus at about 300 p.m. today. since we were eating the food and then now Yeah. Mhm. So, yeah, we’re going to have to get back on the bus in a little bit. About an hour and a half is how long you get to enjoy the presence of the deer and really hang out with them. So, yeah, it’s super cool experience, though. I really like this park. Mhm. I’m very excited to keep walking around. And unlike unlike deer in America, these deer don’t run away from you. Yeah. No, deer in America barely barely look at you. And I mean, they bolt off. You guys know if you guys are back in the States and you have deer where you live, they run away, man. But these guys like to socialize. They picked up on cues such as bowing and that’s why they’re called the bowing deer here in North Japan. So again, guys, we’re going to walk around as soon as we find food. I’ll cut to whenever we start maybe feeding the deer or kind of socializing cuz I I’m I’m doing a whole lot of yapping. So we’ll cut to the next clip. Yeah, this deer is eating wood. wood from this. Who’s going to see what Rowan has? She found some food. Look at him. You’re so sweet. Your name is Jimmy now. Oh, wait. It’s a female. Oh, he doesn’t like the part with the ice cream on it. Oh, it only likes the cone. It’s a female. That means its name is Oh, I don’t have anything. I’m sorry. Look this one. Look at him. Like a pack of 20 of them. Is it good ice cream? Huh? So, you got it. Oh, wow. Is it still going? Yeah, it’s still going. Hi. Hi. Yeah, I still got it. Look at how comfy this little bench is. I know you can see it from obviously a third like third perspective. I am taking a seat on a bench with all the deer. What is this? I mean, it doesn’t get much closer than this, guys. Oh, I see. He looking for food. Was there like a giant line or Oh, he’s eating leaves out of the out of the tree. Yeah, guys, this is so cool. I love deer. And again, like I said, it’s probably it’s one of the nicest days that I have seen in Japan. Maybe 68, maybe 60. No, it’s has to be 67. Probably 68 or 69 out uh degrees right now. And there are school loads full of kids, man. Man, if we had field trips like this back in America, really, I would be going crazy. Good job. Okay, no more. No more. I don’t have any, honey. Sorry, buddy. I didn’t even put my hand out. But I think you’re awesome. Field trips where you get to go and talk to the deer, feed them, pull the leaves off the tree. Yeah, guys, we’re going to keep going. Today is is a great day. I mean, that that little that little bus ride to get over here is a long one, but it’s not long whenever you get to to experience an hour and a half with these guys. And like the our group leader, he’s left kind of back at the start. He’s already done this. Of course, he lives here. Dude, could you imagine living here every day and doing this? like some people some people who live here genuinely come out here to kind of just sit and relax and or enjoy the company of of the deer. So that’s where I’m hoping to be at one day. Okay guys, we only have about third 25 or 30 minutes left of this adventure out here at Nara Park until we go to the last exhibit of our tour for the day. Um, but yeah, dude, these deer are so chill. I mean, this guy has been sitting behind the bench that we’ve been at for like 40 minutes now. He’s laid down. He’s rested up. He’s going to chill out. And I think they stay here. They don’t actually like go anywhere else um at night time. Like, this is their home. You just leave them here, you know? So, we’re going to keep hanging out for maybe about 10 minutes cuz the uh walk back to the bus is about 5 minutes. So, of course, you don’t want to be leaving uh your tour guide or any of your guys uh who are waiting for you on the bus. You don’t want to keep them hanging. So, we’re going to hang out, maybe feed a couple more. Um you guys have seen a couple A- roll and B-roll shots, but this is super cool. I’m very excited to be here. If you’ve never been to Nara, um take it into consideration. And I know Tokyo, uh, Shabuya Crossing, uh, Osaka, Kyoto. Obviously, we’re in Kyoto. But hey, if it’s on your bucket list, man, to go to Japan at all, maybe take a day trip, man. Just take a little day trip. It only takes about, like I said, an hour and a half, maybe an hour and 40 minutes to get out here and you get to spend as much time. Uh, they have deer cracker spots, they have spots that you can buy lettuce, they have spots that you can buy ice cream cones, and they will eat the cones. But, uh, don’t eat them any or don’t feed them anything unnecessary. We’ve been uh we’ve been seeing some people who have tried to feed um some of these guys like donuts or things that are unnecessary for deer. Please don’t do that. There’s plenty of signage and things that tell you what they can and can’t eat. So, just follow along with the signs. Take into consideration what the people want for these deer and be respectful. Leo. Mhm. Yeah. These We were hanging around here earlier and one of these It wasn’t a local, that’s for sure. One of these tourists fed this deer a piece of crispy cream donut for some reason. Uh like why would you do that in the first place? I have no idea. But yeah, they fed him a crispy cream donut and then they got uh publicly humiliated. So yeah, it was it was rightfully so. If you’re going to come feed these deers, make sure you know what you’re feeding them and following the rules. But uh it’s really not that hard. It’s fun though. Look at these little guys. Yeah. No, absolutely. But yeah, so we’re going to keep walking around. I think we’re going to What are we doing? We’re about to return back to the bus in like 10 minutes. Back towards the bus. So, we hope you like that part of this trip. Bye, bud. Where are we going next time? Yeah, maybe we’ll say goodbye. Goodbye. That one was so chill. Yeah, we’re going to start head trekking back to the the bus stop. And I don’t actually know. I know that we have one more stop for the day, guys, on this tour. Um, we’ll figure it out, I guess. Yeah, I guess we have one more stop and then after that, we’ll get dropped back off at the uh the lounge, which is where we were picked up this morning. You guys saw in the beginning of the vlog. Um, and then we’ll be going back to the hotel and we’ll film a little outro. But of course, you guys don’t need to know the whole road map for the day, you know. We’ll just we’ll uh we’ll keep going and you guys will keep tracking along with us. Exactly. So, um we will see you in just a minute here. After all that adventuring, we were on our way to eat some amazing N style Japanese food. All right. What’s up, everybody? So, we’ve been traveling like all day long. We’re super exhausted. We just got to this uh restaurant called Yozen. So yeah, we’re excited to eat here. They have obviously guzzas. Um, let me kind of show you guys the menu here. Okay, so we go. [Music] Lots of different foods. So, yeah, lots of different things. We’re gonna we’re going to order, see what we want. Have to push the button. We’re so tired. But, um, yeah, we’re going to have to see what we want and kind of order and take our time for a second, and when the food gets here, we will show you guys. So, yeah. Hello. Hello. Okay, we are at um we just got done being out all day. Um we took a guided tour that we got on Cluke. We love Cluke. And um we went to four different places around Kyoto. We went to the one of the bamboo forests. We went to um Gali. Where else did we go? Um yeah, we went to the bamboo forest. bridge to the bridge tooku bridge or soya bridge and then toama bamboo forest. Then we got to eat some of that delicious food at the uh the lounge was really good. I forget what the name of the to park deer park. We saw the deer. Um so yeah, just like a really long day. We’ve been up since 7:00 a.m. and it’s 7:00 p.m. now, something like that. So, we just got seated um at a place called Guyoo No Osho. Yeah. Which um has amazing reviews on T uh Tableog, which is what you should trust if you’re in uh Japan or Korea or somewhere in Asia. Um don’t always trust Google reviews because those are made by tourists and so they’re not always authentic. table um has actual authentic barbecues and there’s not a single tourist in here but us. They also do not offer an English menu. All good signs. So yeah, so we had to, you know, just take our phones out and Google translate it. Um it has a a menu that you scan and you place the order for yourself. Um so obviously they offer gyozas. They they have the one of the biggest menus I’ve seen since we have been in Japan. It’s about four pages long. They have a whole section full of like stir-fried noodles, a whole section full of fried rices, a whole section full of like um stir- fried pork, uh sweet and sour chicken, sweet and sour pork, of course. Um they have like little dim sums, spring rolls, ramen. Sometimes the sometimes the ordering process can be like a little bit crumbling, but yeah, I think it’s definitely worth it like whenever the food gets here because you’re like, “Oh, okay. This is actually authentic.” You also have kag. They um originally whenever we sat down, like I said, they had the QR code for the menu. So, I tried to use it and it would not allow it at all. I tried it a thousand different ways. I tried to use a VPN. I mean, it just would not allow it. So, we called the little um the server over and she came over and did something and then was like, “Okay, can you try again?” So, I did and then it worked. So, I was able to place our our order. So, now we’re just waiting for our glorious food. The last thing that we ate um was the Shabu Shaba that was part of our tour on Cloop, which was really great. Um, but we have eaten a lot of a lot of meat like protein for like the last three days and I’m just like I really need some noodles or gyoza or something and not so much meat. So besides I love gyoza and I’ve been in Japan for so many days now and I haven’t had them yet. So I talked my whole family into coming here. So let’s hope it’s good. So yeah, we’re going to wait for the food. We’ll come right back whenever the food gets here. All right. What’s up everybody? So, I just got my first serving of food. It’s like this little tiny They call it a perfect portion rice. Uh something like that. I think that’s it. That’s actually him. Yeah. Sorry. I’ll do it again. Okay. There you go. Yeah. Anyways, this is a perfect portion of rice and uh How do I get that? That’s actually what it’s called. It’s called a perfect portion of rice and it’s so little and cute. So, I’m going to take a little tiny bite of this. Is it hot? Okay. Delicious. I don’t have to give them a sweet. That’s yours, huh? Pork and cabbage. Is that what you ordered? I love cabbage. I love cabbage. Um, pork and cabbage. Stir-fried pork and cabbage. Pork and cabbage. Here we go. That’s ours, too. He’ll bring it back. He’ll bring it back. Closer to you on that side by this. Oh, did you video it being this? What I got? I did. Okay. I did not science. Science. What is it? It’s a fried fried noodles with soy sauce. Turn the recorder on. Oh, it’s recording. It’s better. Sorry. Hi, everyone. So, this is what I got. So, we just got all of our food. and it’s um stir fried pork and cabbage. It’s like one of their favorite menu items. So, I was like, “Yep, give me some of that.” So, I just took a bite. So, let’s try it again. Okay. It’s so good. Yum. This is my favorite Asian food I’ve had since I’ve been in Japan. Tastes really good. Hot. We also got yoza. The soy sauce is this one. This one. And it’s soy sauce. Maybe you should almost use cuz I know that they use soy sauce. They have a they have a sweet sauce. You can also just try a little bit. All right. Yay. I got another one. That’s not or that’s not soy sauce. I don’t think so. Nope. Maybe this one. Nope. Nope. That’s water. Maybe that is soy. That’s not it. I think this one is soy sauce. Maybe that is soy sauce. Sauce. Sauce. Maybe that’s what they have. Which means that it’s all right. It’s okay. It’ll just be sweeter than soy sauce. Dioza sauce. Well, six of them are yours. They There’s a clear broth soup. It’s like It’s what we would call egg flour soup in the States. So good. I could eat like a gallon of that. So good. Rowan loves gyoza, too. Gyoza sauce. Very good. What’s it taste like? It’s sweet. It is sweet, but it still tastes a little like soy sauce. Can you give her the water? What is this? What is this? Looks like dehydrated pickle. That gizzle sauce. Oh, it’s cucumber. I was close. I was close with the pickle. That’s good. M yum. M. What is SMB select? Black pepper sauce. Oh, black pepper powder. Wow. You can try something if you’re feeling brave. No. No. I consider myself an adventurous eater until I see something that I’m like, “No way.” Then I’m like, “I’m a just picky baby.” then it’s more adventurous. Mhm. That’s what I’m saying. I consider myself like, “Oh, I’ll try that. I try that. I try that.” And then I’m presented with it and I’m like, “Maybe not so much.” Turn it again. It’s each time it only picks up so much. Turn it. Turn it again. Yeah, I heard you. I just need a little bit. [Music] So good. If anybody wants some of this, you can have some. It’s so And it has the best flavor. What? It’s good. Those ones are like scorching. Yeah, I must have made it like How’s your food though? I have some kind of like chili oil or something. Uh, here. Let me see. What? What is the red? Give me a second. You want to try it? Taste it first. Oh, it’s sesame. Don’t eat that. That’ll ruin it. Um. Holy. Um, what? What is the white? Just vinegar. I think it’s vinegar. Liquid MSG. Oh, maybe. [Music] Good. What are the flavors? Smart. What about flavors? What are the flavors you guys are? Tell the camera. Don’t tell me. Oh, I’m saying what do you It’s like savory, sweet, caramelly deliciousness cuz people don’t eat also like the um the cabbage has a little bit of char on it. It’s so good. What do you What do your noodles taste like? My noodles they they be tasting like like some fire noodle. No, I’m playing. I’m playing. Fried noodles. They uh they taste like like um like regular fried noodles. Like I don’t really know how to explain it, but do they taste like soy sauce? They have a little bit of soy sauce in them. There’s a little bit of oil on the outside. It tastes like I’m not really sure what the oil is, but it adds to the flavor. Sesame. It’s got maybe a um a little bit of saltiness and some sweetness in it. It’s pretty good. It’s like a good combination of both. You can taste the fry on the noodle so much. See, that’s what I think about the cabbage part, too. It’s like got a char on it. It’s really good. I gave it to Rome cuz I can’t eat all that. That’s good, huh? need my plate. Can I put Can I put this back on? Mhm. Oh, D. You didn’t eat your thing. I have. Thank you. This sauce is so good. I got a bunch of leftover stuff that is noodles if any of you guys want it. I have some, too. It’s like vegetables and all sorts of stuff. I eat everything but the vegetables. They added to the taste. Can I have the water? [Music] My shoulder. My shoulders about to I might I might use that spoon for this. Uh that’s what I do. Oh, wait. You already use that? Yeah, that’s what I do. Did you use this one, Dad? So much easier. I Oh, yeah. You can have whatever you want. Take your You got something in your eye? Yeah. Rub something on my eye. Oh, no. What is it? I don’t know. It’s okay. Mayday. Do you want this pork d? Do you want this? Just give me that same plate. I’m thinking about putting it on this. Don’t do that. You’ll ruin it because then it’ll be covered in the sweet sauce. Just push them up on it. Push them up. There you go. That cabbage. More of that cabbage. What? M. What? Don’t forget your soup. What? That’s your soup? That’s mine? Uh-huh. I was not informed because it’s egg flour soup. Zion like the rice. Can I get some napkins? Oh, napkins. Napkins. Napkins. Thank you. [Applause] Yum. So full now. All right. So, I’m supposed to do this one. If you want to put just a little of salt in it. And explain the flavors. Okay. Got hurry in it. No, it doesn’t. This does. That’s That’s what that is. Oh, that’s what that flavor is. I didn’t know what that was. It’s not that bad. It’s not too bad. It’s just very unique. Very unique. Yeah, really unique. That’s Japanese. Japanese curry. Was that good? The egg roll. Daniel, was the egg roll good? What’s your name? Cuz I I talked to you and then you didn’t hear, so I have to question. Is it Daniel? Mhm. [Music] Try [Music] You can have one of those. It’s like a little bit hot. All right, that’ll be it for me. Okay. What? Nope. He already had one. So that means one of them’s mine. You can have it. Dan won’t eat those anyway. All right. I just thought was hot in here. That’s spicy. You don’t want any more of this, right, Dan? Any more of the cabbage? I don’t think there’s any more pork in there. There’s a little piece. And then Yeah, that’s it. All right. Well, you guys got the sauce. You guys got to see us eat everything. Everything that we just ate. It was pretty dang good. There was a lot of food.
