Tokyo: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a bullet train ride from Tokyo to Sendai with his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba, on the second day of his visit to Japan on Saturday.
The two leaders visited a semiconductor plant at Sendai in the Japanese prefecture of Miyagi, at a distance of over 300 km from Tokyo. The visuals of bonhomie between the duo came a day after New Delhi and Tokyo resolved to deepen cooperation in the critical technology sector.
Later in the day, Prime Minister Ishiba hosted a lunch in honour of Modi in Sendai that was joined by the governor of Miyagi prefecture and other dignitaries.
PM Modi’s visit to the Tokyo Electron Miyagi Ltd (TEL Miyagi) in Sendai highlighted the complementarity between India’s growing semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem and Japan’s strengths in the sector, an Indian readout said. TEL Miyagi, a leading Japanese company in the semiconductor sector, has plans for collaborations with India.

Modi was briefed about TEL’s role in the global semiconductor value chain, its advanced manufacturing capabilities and its ongoing and planned collaborations with India.
The visit gave the leaders a practical understanding of the opportunities that exist between the two countries to forge collaboration in the field of semiconductor supply chain, fabrication and testing, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in the readout.
“Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in this sector, building on the Memorandum of Cooperation on the Japan–India semiconductor supply chain partnership as well as ongoing partnerships under the India–Japan Industrial Competitiveness Partnership and Economic Security Dialogue,” it said.
It said the joint visit by Modi and Ishiba to the facility also underscored the shared vision of India and Japan to develop robust, resilient and trusted semiconductor supply chains.
“Prime Minister Modi conveyed his appreciation to Prime Minister Ishiba for joining him in this visit and reaffirmed India’s readiness to work closely with Japan in this strategic domain,” the MEA said.
Modi and Ishiba held wide-ranging talks on Friday that also focused on deepening cooperation in the semiconductor sector.
PM Concludes Japan Visit, Heads To China For SCO summit
Shortly after his Sendai visit, Prime Minister Modi on Saturday wrapped up his two-day Japan visit and left for China to attend the SCO summit. During his two-day visit to China, Modi will attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin on August 31 and September 1.
The summit of the 10-member bloc is regarded as significant and most consequential from the point of view of India-China relations in the current context of a sudden downturn in India-US ties after Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports. This will be Modi’s first visit to China in seven years.
India-Japan Firm Up Key Agreements
During PM Modi’s visit, India and Japan firmed up 13 key agreements and declarations and announced the launch of several transformative initiatives.
“This visit to Japan will be remembered for the productive outcomes which will benefit the people of our nations. I thank PM Ishiba, the Japanese people and the Government for their warmth,” the prime minister said in an X post.

The new measures to further expand the India-Japan special strategic and global partnership were unveiled following summit talks between Prime Minister Modi and Ishiba.
Japan set an investment target of 10 trillion yen (approximately Rs 60,000 crores) in India over a decade and the two sides sealed a raft of big-ticket pacts, including a framework for defence ties and a 10-year roadmap to largely boost economic partnership.
Other agreements signed include an economic security architecture to promote supply chain resilience in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, clean energy, telecom, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals and new and emerging technologies.
The prime minister, who landed in Tokyo on Friday, said India-Japan cooperation is crucial for global peace and stability, and both sides have laid a strong foundation for a “new and golden chapter” in the partnership.
The 10-year roadmap focuses on significantly expanding overall economic ties. It comprised several key pillars for boosting engagement that included economic security, mobility, ecological sustainability, technology and innovation, health, people-to-people exchanges and engagements between Indian states and Japanese prefectures.
The two sides also signed an implementing arrangement for the Chandrayaan-5 mission, a joint exploration of the polar region of the moon by the space agencies of the two countries.
