Roaming around Otaru, in the heart of winter, was definitely a good idea. During Valentine’s Day no less. Spent 2 days in this snowy wonderland amidst the storm, and left with the promise to come back (because—why not?!)

DAY 1 ❄️
Shukutsu Aquarium
– A must-see, best when there’s no snowstorm because the bus/cab/walk to the Aquarium can get dangerously slippery (take it from me…)
– Had to opt out of the penguin walk, unfortunately, due to the time and the weather. But it’ll be a non-negotiable for when we return 🐧
Otaru Canal
– It’s lined with small snow and ice sculptures, only there for a week or so, for the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival. So pretty at night, but also a beaut on its own at daytime. They sell chai tea latte at the end of the canal, as well as some hand-painted souvenirs. In the summer, there’s usually a guitarist and more artists who do real-time sketches!
Otaru Beer
– Just a short walk with a stunning view of the canal while you eat. Lots of beer options to choose from, too. Giving Hogwarts vibes because of the interior.

DAY 2 ❄️
Otaru Canal
– Still pretty cold despite the sun in the morning, but some of the snow from the previous night had already melted. As you walk along the streets, you’ll see fallen Left gloves, broken rubber shoe soles among others. They still weren’t allowing tourists to try the boat ride at that time (but it’s an experience of its own in the summer!)
Orgel Doh/Music Box Museum
– This one is somewhere towards the end of the road (from the Otaru station), but definitely worth visiting. There are plenty of music boxes that vary in sizes, wooden and glass types, and magnets for souvenirs. Don’t forget to try sitting in the huge music box where they play Castle in the Sky (it’s beside the benches lined up at the right side).
Otaru Clock Tower
– Right across Orgel Doh. Has a fun tune that plays every fifteen minutes. Best to get a good angle from up close, or from the Hello Kitty Cafe side (cross the road to the Steam Clock area).
Otaru Steam Clock
– This one’s pretty easy to miss if you’re not looking, since it blends in with its background, but it also rings and puffs out steam (5x?) at certain times. It’s right beside the Hello Kitty Cafe.

If you’re planning your 2026 Winter Trip to Japan, you can definitely include Otaru for at least one day in your IT.
