Thinking of visiting Japan in 2025? Locals say these two spots are a no-go right now.
First, Tokara Islands. Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, and the Tokara Islands, between mainland Japan and Okinawa, have been hit by over 1,000 quakes recently. Some reached magnitude 6, damaging the area. Residents are already evacuating, and the shaking hasn’t stopped.
Second, Shuri Castle in Okinawa. Once the royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom, it stood for centuries as a cultural symbol. But in 2019, a devastating fire destroyed most of it. Reconstruction is underway, so right now you’ll mostly see construction work. Best to plan a visit after it’s fully rebuilt in 2026.
